My girlfriends have ranged from PHDs, to TV executives, to gymnasts...here I'll relay a tale to you.
About 10 years back I dated a woman that was, perhaps still is, the creative director at MNET.
We'd been seeing each other for about three weeks when she said she would be away for 10 days as she had to go to Malaysia to oversee the last part of a Survivor Series shoot - The one where Mark Fish and Corne Kroger were team captains.
She floated the idea that I fly out there and keep her company. I agreed.
After landing in Singapore, I was driven into Malaysia, and the final leg of the journey was a boat ride to the island where she and the production crew were staying...a nearby island to where the contestants are filmed doing whatever they do.
Anyhow, when I arrived, she was waiting for me on the jetty. This was during lunch time and as her and I walked past the restaurant I could see a bunch of the production crew make the best of the Malaysian cuisine.
Anyhow, being the boss, she had the biggest chalet there with a jacuzzi at the front. So while she was out filming during the day, I would be reading a book and soaking up rays in the jacuzzi.
But I started to notice that people were treating me very strangely. I'd be in the jacuzzi, and members of the production crew would bring me champagne, offer to pour it for me, ask me if there was anything they could do for me, etc. I'd be fetching morning coffee from the restaurant and high-level production crew would offer to carry my coffee back to the room for me. I began to think that this girl I was seeing must be some really mean bitch that they are terrified of because there really was no need for the excessive gestures they were making. This went on for a few days...
That's when we finally figured it out.
When I arrived to the island, the entire crew saw her meet me at the jetty. There was nobody superior to her on the island and so they assumed the only reason she would make the effort to fetch a person at the jetty would be if they were her boss...which would have made me like the owner of MNET or something.
I kept playing the owner of MNET role for a few days, it was great fun. We had a good laugh about it when eventually at a dinner I came clean and told them I was just some guy seeing their boss.
And here's another funny bit.
When contestants got voted off the island, they would come to the production island and stay there until the conclusion of the shoot, since they still had to vote in the show. Their chalets were smaller one's behind the one where my lady and I were staying.
One morning as we left the chalet, a senior member of the production crew approached us looking a tad sheepish.
He said that he wanted to confirm with her that contestants that had been voted off were not allowed to communicate with each other or even be in contact.
"That's correct. But why do you ask?" She said.
"Well, it's just that for the past few nights I have heard sex noises coming from those chalets and it's very loud and goes on for very long."
We both struggled to contain our laughter. It wasn't the contestants he was hearing ;)
