I do like debates based on substantial research - not on media stories. The story of Ukranians residing in the Donbas area before the 1770's is total BS. Ukraine was at that time not even an independent country - it was part of the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth while the Donbas area fell under the Crimea Sultanate. The Donbas area had very small groups of Tartan Kossaks living a nomadic lifestyle since capture by the Turks or Crimeans would mean automatic enslavement.
In one of the major wars against the Ottoman Empire and their Crimea subsidiary - Potemkin managed to capture the whole peninsula and the Donbas region. It was basically a depopulated area and Catherine the Great encouraged and move subordinates from Bulgaria and Russia to the area. However, she had another idea that materialized 40 years after her death. She wanted to cultivate a separate Greek Empire in the Balkans with her youngest son beoming the Emperor. She wanted to curry favor with the Greeks and many Greeks also moved to Donbas area and the Crimea. The whole idea was to enhance the development of Greece and the Balkans under the hegemony of the Russians. It never materialized because towards the end of her reign the revolution in Frace became a threat to Russia.
Once a story in the media start about Ukrainians living in the Donbas area it is clearly BS. As to the Crimea Under the Russian Empire people were encouraged to move there and many moved there while the naval facilities also was followed by influx of Russians into the Crimea, However, your dear leader Stalin in the 1930's decided to take more than 3 million Tartars from the Crimea and sent them to his beloved slave camps in Siberia. That left huge empty spaces without people and Stalin filled it by moving people from Russia to the Crimea, There were virtually zero Ukrainians in the Crimea and in the Donbas area, After the death of Stalin the deportees were allowed to return to the Crimea, There were only circa 200 000 returnees,

Let me explain something to you about Russian Disinformation. I got the figures of killings from Wikipedia - not really Russian disinformation - is it? What was weird is that was about 7 months ago and if you are looking at the latest information about deaths from 2014 to 2021 - the figures has been changed drastically. The 14 000 figure was indicated as being the case for the period before the Minsk agreement was signed and Wikipedia indicated at the time that the death toll after that was 4 500 during the remainder of the period 2015 to 2021.
Other sources indicated that most of the deaths occurred in fighting around Mariupol that resulted in over 2000 murder/executions by the Asov Battalion of civilians in the city when they took over the city, Another 1000 people were killed in Odessa when there were peaceful demonstrations on labor issues and the same Battalion was brought in by the Ukraine Govenor - ee comments lower down about that one. and the demonstrators fled into the Union Hall Complex - which was set on fire with the demonstrators inside it and all the "refugees" died in the fire. Both the Mariupol and Odessa incidents were verified by the UN as having taken place. It was after those two incidents that the Asov Battalion was classified as a terrorist organization by the UN. Even the USA ordered that they should not receive assistance through aid programs. That did not deter anybody - the Batallion was integrated into the Ukraine Army and the terrorist label mysteriously vanished.
So what is this Asov Battalion? It was started by a committed Nazi by the name of Andrij Biletsky - and was part of the Facsist Patriot of Ukraine movement started in 1982. Wikipedia called the movement as being accused by critics as being a far right and ultra-Nationalist - but there is no doubt it is a Nazi movement using the Nazi insignia on their regimental flags. The funder of the movement was surprisingly the Yewish Oligarch Ihor Kolomoyskyi - who also is the main funder of the Party who supported Zelenskyy in his Presidential campaign.
Another weird part according to Wikipedia is that in the attack in 2014 on Mariupol the partners of the Asov Battalion was the Chezniah Separatists - the main sponsors and starters of ISIS and the Boston bomb incident - as well as supporters of the Georgian ex-President Saakhalashvili - who were kicked out by the Georgians and in absentia charged with murder, bribery and corruption.- the latter is now the Governor of Odessa. No wonder murder was the norm in that company. By the way the Russians warned the USA about the two people involved in the Boston bomb incident - but the FBI did nothing about it.

People with no military training and little to no military-grade equipment are being slaughtered.
If reports are correct, some Russians are wearing plastic toy helmets, world war 2 guns. Some have purchased body armour on eBay et c, etc.
Trained Russian army personnel form the rear, and shoot any Russian deserters that try to retreat. It is pretty much a death sentence.
These are conscripts, many of whom don't even want to fight in the war. Some are from jail and promised if they survive they will be pardoned from their jail sentence.
Unfortunately for them, none of them will survive the war. They are mere cannon fodder fighting for a pointless cause.
It might just be best to shoot themselves in the arm, so they can't fight, and then hopefully they get a pardon as a war hero.
