Unreal was incredible at the time. That first emergence from the downed spacecraft into a huge outdoor world is a gaming moment that will stick with me forever. I wonder how many people fell into the massive canyon in the first area because you simply didn't expect anything like that to be there. Nothing in gaming up to that point could prepare you for it.
Jy weet dan ou Pakie...another favorite was halflife...the multi-player was just so much better than anything else at that time...WTF happened with Fortnight? Epic not epic no more ...woke k@k
...detest it almost as much as bloody minecraft!
Was watching a developer conference the other day and they were talking about open world games and AI.
They said that, in time, you will be able to pick a location, your own town if you like, and AI will use Google maps to generate it as the location where your game takes place...populate the town with enemies etc. So basically using your local surroundings as the map for the game.
We think we are far away from the days of Pong now...give it another ten years. Things are about to get goofy.
Plum yes, interesting times. I've seen some videos with AI powered NPCs. Still very rough around the edges obviously but solid potential. UE5 is just gorgeous.
Ja Draad, Half-Life was excellent. The first time a grunt landed a grenade next to me where I was cosily hidden behind some crates was hilarious. What they managed to do with scripted behaviour back then was better than the AI we had in many top end games a decade or
more later. The end game let it down a bit though, that was just a pain in the ass. Much like the first Far Cry was also let down by the final stretch. But I guess aliens were all the buzz back then. The woke shit is irritating. Especially when even fantasy realms like DnD can't escape from it. Let games be games.
Diablo 4 season 4 is launching next week.
It's kinda like the real launch because this season update will put it much closer to the shape that the game should have launched in.
Perfect time to jump in.
I see Crysis 4 trailer dropped recently
Epic please fix the f**king shader stutter. Thank you.

This anti woke shit is irritating, every games steam forum is clogged up with this shit. Games are just games, bad games are bad games simply because they are bad games not wokeness.
people don't want obvious political agendas forced down their throats all the time...there's a reason for the reaction to woke...
What games do you play, Stav?

"Yes its a right wing media campaign, designed to make people angry about shit that isn't important. Keep them distracted by saying the reason that a TV series, movie or game is crap is because the lead character is a female, non white or gay, or heaven forbid all 3 of them."
Sounds like a conspiracy theory...and it's way more complicated than that.
The problem with woke in games is that it's political. Conservatives don't push their politics in games, so I think it annoys people when all you wanna do is shoot zombies and you're reminded to "take a knee" or that some character is gender fluid. It doesn't kill a game, just provides some irritation. I prefer games to entirely free of politics.
Stav, another SF player!? Deus was also big on SF. I was too...still have my Mad Cats Torni Edition stick. Has there ever been a better 2d fighter mechanic than the "Focus->Dash->Cancel"?
I remember my flatmate at the time, a Rebellion developer, texting me something along the lines of "The Killzone days are over. I'm brining back a new game and some weed."
For the next year that was all we played. He was far better than me and also competed in a few competitions. I was an Adon main. Lots of good memories of that game.
For me though, the two biggest standouts have been Division(particularly the DZ and stealing people's loot) and Trials in Destiny 2. Probably my best achievement is doing Lighthouse carries with a buddy. Destiny 2's PvP has just always been on another level for me.

I can't think of a single game where I was reminded to "take a knee". Press F to pay respects maybe? I just don't see wokeness. I see games that are either good or bad on their own merits of gameplay, technical prowess, story and world building.

Yeah I had two of those sticks one for each console. As a Dictator player FADC didn't actually benefit me much but overall I liked the mechanic. But it wasn't popular among the hard core, ST and 3rd Strike elitists who kinda looked down on it but it brought in a whole new generation of players.

Am a fan of Rebellions Sniper Elite games, good brainless fun, best 7/10 game series ever.
Yeah SF IV series was a great game, really invigorated the fighting game scene after years of decline. Had some good times too. Adon was damn annoying.

I own both Division games but never played them. Never played Destiny 2 either. Not really into live service games. Seem too much like time sink s.
"I can't think of a single game where I was reminded to "take a knee". Press F to pay respects maybe?"
Apex Legends is full of rainbow flags, gender neutrals, and indeed the player that looks most like a NFL player suggests that you take a knee(it's a direct reference to the Throwsa Parks) saga.
It just annoys me but doesn't ruin the game.
Rebellion - yeah that has been a super successful series for them. Tom is a sound coder there and been with the studio for something 18 years now. Not my type of game though. For me, I have an evil need for pvp and a desire to make people uninstall their game haha
"Am a fan of Rebellions Sniper Elite games"
Same, great games
The new season of Diablo 4 drops tomorrow.
Come kill some monsters dudes.

Since the launch of Unreal Engine 5, people have made some pretty cool sequences with it.
AI is helping developers and creators with the heavy lifting, so we're not too far away from being able to create navigatable environments with the level of detail you see below.
To make things even more interesting, for the first time in history, non-player characters within these environments no longer follow simple conversation trees. It's now possible to train/instruct them with an agenda/s and a personality. For example, you could ask them to tell you a joke...and it's AI that comes up with the joke...there is no joke already written down it just reads to you. Or it might tell you to piss off and that it doesn't do jokes.
On a side note, I feel like this has so many applications in education.
I know that Rooi gets how crazy this is...
