The IPL has announced that the 8 clubs must indicate which players they are going to release from their 2020 squad and that a new auction will be held on or about 11 February 2021.   The original idea was t hold a grand auction and all clubs would release all the players and then Clubs will have to rebid for all players they want.   However that would have to wait until 2022 when the number of clubs will be increased to 10.

It must be borne in mind that due to the crazy selection policies of CSA - there are comparatively few SA Players playing in the IPL so which SA players are secure and which ones are not so:-

Mumbai Indians

Quinton de Kock  -  He is the opening bat and wicketkeeper for the club that won the IPL trophy in 2019 and 2020.   He was their highest run-scorer in both years and he will not be released - but rather given a nice increase n income.

Delhi Capitals

Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje.   For the first time in a decade Delhi Capitals was in the final of the competition and the main reason for that was the demolition of opposition batsmen.  Rabada has played for the Club for the past four years, The Club got Nortje as a replacement at a cheap price - but after his exploits in 2020 theyw ill not release him and they would heve to up his salary drastically to ensure that he stays with them and do not ask for his name  be included in the auction list.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

AB de Villiers, Chris Morris and Dale Steyn.    AB is very popular in India and did well in most of the IPL matches he played in - not as well as he used to - but he is not at all under thread of being dropped,  It is not sure whether Morris is going to be retained by his club.   For some reason or another Morris was only  used by the club for a few matches towards the end of the tournament - but in those matches he was good - so he mays survive the chopping block,   Dale Steyn was only used in two games and in the second he gave away 52 runs in four overs,  Steyn already indicated that he will not be playing for Bangalore this year and the fact is that he was already told by the club that they don't want to renew his contact,

Sunrisers Hyderabad

No SA Players in squad,

Colcatta Knight Riders

No SA Players in the squad

Kings 11 Punjab

Hardus Viljoen.   I do not think he played in any of the games last year and he is likely not likely to be retained,

Rajahstan Royals

David Miller.     Although he as in the 2020 squad he did not play in any games for the Club,   Not sure about the reason though,   No idea about what the Club would do about him

Chennai Super Kings

Faf du Plessis, Lungi Ngidi and Imran Tahir.   For the first time ever the Club ended up being bottom of the log and in the past decade up to 2019  they  have always been in the play-offs.   The main problem is that  there are too many elderly ex-international players in the squad who do not produce the  goods anymore,  These players are going to  pay a heavy price for that,    Du Plessis started off well and made some good scores and then deteriorated badly towards the end of the tournament and he may be on a slippery slope as a result.   Both Ngidi and Tahir each played only two matches for the Club during the whole series and they might also be released.
