No he wasn't ignorant of what was going on. Enough evidence had already come out by then to know what had gone on. In fact the department of external affairs all but begged him not to do it.
But for De Valera it was merely a matter of following proper diplomatic protocol. You see De Valera believed in neutrality in principial. It's the reason why he didn't push for Ireland to declare war on Germany like other neutral countries did when it became obvious that Germany was going to lose the war. For him neutrality wasn't just a tool to be used to protect Ireland from the dangers of being invaded by another country and then when that danger passed it could be discarded. He actually believed in it.
Now the decision was one of the more controversial acts that De Valera did and was criticized at home and aboard. It was a serious diplomatic blunder. But compare that to the insanity Trump has inflicted on the world something you go out of your way to frequently defend their is just no comparison. De Valera was a great man and a great leader. The country with the second most start ups in the world is Israel, not per capita in absolute terms. With 10 million people Israel ….way ahead of Europe….and in AI and Quantum computing.
A long interview on CNBC where he says Israel wants to move from Aid to Partnership. That Israel has come of age. An impressive, difficult interview where he traced the history of the Jewish people and underlined their resolve never to be victims again.
Reading between the lines he thinks the blockade is the key to achieving a good result…something I have always believed.
He also commented about the weaknesses of the Obama agreement, the value of regime change and the fracturing of the Iran/Hezbollah/Hamas axis.
