The Beijing tournament have the toughest fields I have ever seen in an APT 500 tournament. Even the qualifiers may be in the Top 32 ranked players in the World The only top ten players not seeded are Djokovic and Fritz. Not surprising - all these players are in a desperate hunt to reach the ATP Championship to be held in mid-November.
This tournament is followed by another ATP 1000 Masters tournament in Shanghai starting next week. The same players together with Djokovic and Taylor will be in that meatgrinder as well. I will be surprised if Djokovic does not play in Shanghai, It could represent a huge dent in his ranking points - he already lost 250 points in not playing in Astana or in Beijing and his absence in Beijing in Shangai would mean losing in total a potential 2 000 ranking points lead if Alcaraz won in both Beijing and Shanghai.
Atana having been a ATP 500 series in 2022 with the Chinese component not being played has been reduced to an ATP 250 tournament this year. Apparently the points lost has been reduced to 250 points and in some cases where people earned 250 or less points eliminated from the ranking system. If he Astana tiurnament in 2024 is still an ATP 250 tournament next year and players d not play in the 250 format they will mlose the 250 points they benefited from in the past. .
