What is wrong with Casper Ruud? To the surprise of many Ruud last year played in some semifinals and even though he was poor in the final matches he played in he got extra ranking points - eg 1300 points in the Roland Garros tournament.
Ruud was poor in the matches he played in in January 2023 and he then took a month off away from tennis. It did not help him and since he retuned to play he just cannot get past rounds 2 or 3 and was beaten by unseeded players in matches. He seems to be out-of-form - but it is worse, He h as like Medvedev last year was poor because h lacks attacking ability in matches, -just to h it back balls and giving openings for opposing players to attack is a definite recipe for disaster.
He was at one stage ranked 2 in the world - now he is back to 4 - if present trends continue he would be out of the top 10 by the end of the year.

I took a bet on a double match with Rublev and Khachanov being leg 1 today and on Rublev beating Khachanov in the Round 4 match tomorrow. Would like to win on that one.
Ruud is a steady Eddie, he doesn’t have a killer shot….to me the surprise is not so much that he has fallen back into the pack, but that he got to Number 2 at one point.

My impression as well. I will expect him to play in Rome next week and then in the Roland Garros tournament. Poor performances in those two tournaments will take Ruud out of the top 10 rankings.
I still have no idea of who will be the finalists in Madrid. In the top half of the D raw (with Rune gone) - it depends on what happens in Round 4 between Alcaraz and Zverev and the winne o that will likely have to play Rublev in the quarterfinals. The winner of those matches are likely to be the one finalist.
As to the bottom half of the draw I think that he level of perf
ormances of players being in the bottom half of the draw is comparatively weaker. - but want to see what happens in the matches being played today.

FINAL
1 Carlos Alcaraz vs Jan-Lennard Struff
In a 3 setter Carlos Alcaraz is Champion in Madrid again.
It was a bit of a struggle for Alc
araz to win - but congrats to him is utterly deserved.

The tournament starts on 24 April 2023 with the first two days being reserved for qualification matches.
As expected Djokovic will not play in Madrid and the draw took place today - but has not been published yet. I will provide the full match schedules starting with Round 2 tomorrow or asap.
