There were thus far some real surprises in results in Round 1, Those include -
* Wawrinka - who has not won against a top 10 player for ages - beating Casper Ruud;
* Rinderknech beating Marin Cilic;
* Stricker beating Cressy; and
* Molcan beating McDonald.
* Rune beating De Minaur
The fact is that Ruud this year had a dismal record in most tournaments, He had the luck of a pox-doctor getting through to the finals in Paris and Wimbledon - where he lost badly in both. For ordinary tournaments he was beaten in rounds 1 or 2 at least four times and has had no tournaments final wins this year. on any level. With that kind of record he ahs a chanc e of doing better in 2023 - but whether that would materialize is another question. A good player - but whether he actually belongs in the Top 10 rankings looks questionable.
Thus far only 1 of the 4 seeded players i n the bottom half of the draw survived the first Round - namely Bautista-Agut. Looks li
ke Rune would have a clear run through to the semifinal\

Djokovic is not really interested in playing in Turin in the EOY Championship in mid-November - or that may seem to be the case - since there is no confirmation of him playing on the Paris Maters Tournament starting on 31 October 2022. if he does not play in the latter tournament he ahs zero chanc e to be in the top 8 players and will also lose his pesent n 7 ranking. We will hopefully kno by SDatirday whether he is involved.
Nadal has confirmed that he is going to play in Paris next week and will play in the EOY Championship in Turyn.
