The results of tennis  matches  this year has been shocking for the last sic months.  This is particularly so when it comes to the  10  top ranked players.    Although  Federer played only three matches this year - he won only one and lost the other two by players outside of the Top 5 players. It clearly shows that as a  serious injury at his age - putting him out of tennis - will stop any chance of remaining a top 10 player,

So who are the players  from the top 10  that showed  declimne in performances this year?   Here are the factual list;

1      Roger Federer

2      Diego Schwartzman

3      Dominic Thiem

4       Novak Djokovic

5      Rafael Nadal

6      Danill Medvedev

The 7th top ten player is  Matteo Berrettini who has been on and off during matches he played in this year,   He has been average and will likely be around the number 8 or 9 ranking in future.

I must add that Medvedev  could possibly suffer from a decline in performances due to his recent Covid infection and he is not a clay court player specialist - he dislikes  playing on clay courts,   Once there is a return to hard court tennis  he is likely to improve/

The only three players who actually performed  consistently well this year:-

1     Stefanos Tsitsipas

2     Alexander Sverev

3     Andrey Rublev

At this stage the fact is that the ranking system was changed in 2020 year and effectively protected  players like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic/  The changed system was not a real evaluation of performances and the ATP have decided to return to the previous system in August this year.     That could drastically effect the position of some  ranked players who compared to the past year  did not perform up to standard and   may result in going  down in the ranking system,

The fact is that if the players above players do not improve  later this year they are going to lose their privileged rankings.
