Before today Doug Sanders missing a 3 ft putt to allow Jack Nicklaus to win the British and Greg Norman’s implosion at the Masters were the most famous chokes in golf. Today Rory went one further….missing a 30 inch putt on 16, followed by a 42 incher on the last green.

As McIlroy rolled in a series of implausibly long putts leading up to these events, the thought occurred that he might miss a gimme at some point….golf is so perverse. But two of them, incredible.

In the meantime Bryson dumped drive  after drive in the rough, rescuing pars with stellar chips…finally getting up and down from a bunker 50 yards out. The unchoke.

A bit of irony seeing Rory imploding to hand the title to a LIV golfer, few golfers have been more outspoken about LIV.

A sad choke by Rory and something he may never recover from, but any talk of biggest choke in golf is rendered insignificant when compared to Jean van de Velde's notorious choke in the 1999 Open Championship. Nothing else comes close.

Jean could have hit a 5 iron, another 5iron chipped and still won if he missed the putt. Either a huge choke or the Gallic proclivity to do things gloriously ….maybe a bit of both.
