There i sone thing unique about the racing on Saturday   There are 11races that day abd all the Price money is paid for by Johann Rupert,  His wife and sister runs the top breeding farm in SA nd they always retain the bet horses the bred to rn in thetop rces in SA - te rest they sell off,

Last year Rupert's bred horses owned by his wife and siste won thee of the 11 races amongst others the main race as well.    I will study he card tomorrow and will put some of te orses i thik would in for your info on site,

Here is a bit of History on the Kings Plate:-

The King's Plate (known as the Queen's Plate during the reigns of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II) is an annual Grade I horse race at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape TownSouth Africa that has been run since 1861, and is one of South Africa's premier horse races.[1] Currently sponsored by the South African vintner L'Ormarins, it was branded the L'Ormarins Queen's Plate from 2005 to 2022,[2] and the L'Ormarins King's Plate since 2022. Traditionally named in honour of the British monarch, it reverted to the "King's Plate" name as a result of the accession of King Charles III in September 2022.[1][3][4]

The race was first run, as the Queen's Plate, in April 1861 in honour of Queen Victoria after she donated a silver plate and 500 sovereigns to the South African Turf Club.[5]

The winner of the race earns a berth in the Breeders' Cup Mile.[citation needed]

It is customary for the British high commissioner to South Africa to attend the race and read out a message of good wishes from the British monarch."

l"Ormanns Wine Farm belonged to Anton Rupert and as in hsi will left to Johan Rupert's ounger brother brother.

Following his younger brother Anthonij's death in a car accident in 2001 he took over the L'Ormarins wine estate. Anthonij, was head of Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons. Rupert initiated a project to enhance the farm in memory of his late brother.  Part of that enhancements relates to horseracing  wih his wife and sister ebeing he brededers at their Drakenstein Stud Fam\

The old story of Money going after money is really true,    Frans Malherbe's grandfather had two twin sisters who became teachers and moved to Durban.   The one got married - but her husband died and left her 10 000 pounds.   The other one never got married,   When Anton Rupert tried to raise money to start Rembrand in the 1930 the two sisters bought shares to the tune of 10 000 pound and for years seved on the Board of Rembrand.  In the 1960's the two old sistes moved to Still Bay and used to walk around town and beg people to help them with bread and other food - since they had no money - that while the two could have bought out  all the homes in Still Bay and would still have millions to spare.   Funny crowd that lot.

Tx Mike, will have a look at the card although I'm not too familiar with SAFFA horses.

Just as an aside, quite a few SAFFA jockeys out here now as well as a few Irish and English, Callan Murray was the latest to arrive, he rides out of the country town of Geelong. Hasn't set the racing world on fire, neither has any of the others, Glyn was good but getting on in years.

I know Glynn retired in 2023 - but I was at his weddng with Tifany Roberts and often spent Christmas with them until 2007 and I also took the family to luxury restaurants in Durban.   Those were some of the best times in my life,

One very funny story = I was having lunch at Greyville Racecouse with  Joy Barendse (is wife's grandmother)  and Kerry Roberts.   During lunch I said  the two ladies I want to see a race in Cape Town and after the race I went back to the table and then Mrs Sivwright another ex-jockey's wife asked me which horse won the race and I gave the name,   The lady sitting next to her burst out in tears  = she was the wife of Syd Laird - who was training the  said winner the Tuesday before and died of a heart attack and out came the classic from her:-

"I wonder what odds St Peter gave Syddy on that horse".

In any event I am having a look at the card and would bet on the following:-

Race 1   -    5   Black Cheetah

Race  3  -     1   Questioning and no 10  Liam Rampart

Race 6   -     8    Double Grand Slam

Race 7   -     3    Oriental Charm, 5   One Stripe and 13  Snow Pilot

Race 8   -     3    Future  Pearl and   4  Navy Strength

Race 9   -     6    Let it be said  and   13 Garix

Watch where the money goes  and that may give a better indication f what is happenig,

Wow Mike that sounds like heady days, you mixed with the creme de la creme.

I vaguely remember, was it Robert Sivewright?....he was a top class jockey along with, was it Bertie Hayden and Michael Roberts? Goes back a long, long time. I was just a kid then. My memory might be failing me.

Syd Laird had two great horses......Colorada King and another who was shot in the hind leg.......Sea Cottage? Still managed to finish equal first with Jollify in the July.

I envy you:D

Edit: Had a look at your tips I'll now have a look at the betting.

I think  Sivewright was a jockey together with Aubrey Roberts - not Michael (Muis) Roberts,   I can tell you anther story about the latter,   Muis as riding three horses  one was in the week before the Summers Cup and the other two a the week before,   A friend of mine was aksed to take out a treble bet on the three horses at R250 000 to R1 000 and he did the bet on behalf of Muis.   The Durban Bookmaker then cntact a book maker to lay off  the bet with a Bookmake in Cape Town - and he was planning to lay off the same bet himself - he also had a bet of R250 000 to R1 000 as well,    The Durban Bookmaker then phoned te biggest bookmkaer in SA operating in Pretoria and it turned out he ahd a worst case - he laid a bet of R50000 000 to a R2 000 on te same thee horses.

Me being an idiot I decided to spent a R100 on the same bet and the drama started.   The first two horse won their races and now we all ad to wait for the third race in the summe Cup again riden by muis.   I was already counting he money but Muis did not win the third race - story was he was R500 000 not to win the raise,

Another story about Muis    I went off to the Wild Coast casino one Saturday when Muis was riding a horse or the Passmore's  in te main race at 4/10 - but I smelt a rat and took two horses at 20;1 in the main race and picked a 5/2 banker in the next race and added to that 4 horses in each of the last two races. and thought I hit the jackport when I found I won the jackpot.   I expected a pay-out of R10 000 rand - but the Jackpot only paid R1 500.    Aferwards the Passmores got charged with misconduct.  They did not pick their favorite to win the race and took the same Jackpot I did 50 times - leaving their hot-pot favorite out.

I did not know he Passmore's well  but I was watching the saddling of the horses one dy when they waved at me and I looked at their horse and said the bets were 8/1 s I went and take a bet of R1 000 to R120 on the horse.  It duely won.

I had a probem in the early 1980's with gambling at one stage my salary was R550 a month and my bank account trasactions amounted to R17 000 a month - all from horseracing.     It scared the shit out of myself - so i stopped going to races for about 5 years.  The good years was gone and the profit margin neve returned.

While working in Ballto one of my best friends was Johnny Rey - the borther in law of Penny Coelen,    Johnny owned some race horses that was trained by Bass and after the latter's retirement by Glenn Kotze.   Anyway Johnnny gave me some winners and one day said i should put a ew rands on a horse he and Bass owned,    So I put R5 on the horse  on the Tote,  When I went to buy a race card an Indian wman asked me if I know any winners that day so I told her to put R5 on the horse I bet,   The bloody donkey won and paid R75 per rand and the wman said she would give me free samosas for a month,

While typing out this story Richard Fourie was on four races in a row in PE.  I had money on all four.  LOL       So  the fifth race was won by anther hrse I backed.  Five winnes in a row is relly my style of batting  LOL

Should have  given teh horses I backed today - but racing wa in PE and I do not know whether the Aussies would take bets on those horses.     Shit - betting another winner in the sixth race. Can I lose?

Eina - anther winner backed by me     7 aces run and I backed  7 winners.    One race to go.     And I bcked the 8th race winner as well.    that was ahealthy date for my racing ccount.

Denny - I en t through the card again and my comments are as followings;

#     Race 1  Black Cheetah will win -  if you mknow abot another winner today take a double with Black Cheetah.   I took a look at the Randwick races tomorrow and Zac Lloyd and Chad Scofield had no rides - what happened to them?

.#    Race 2 In the secodnd race I am going to back Cork Bay, but Tenango and Handsome Prince may upset te applecart

#     Race 3   The race is between the two horses I gave  above I am going to tke two doubles Black Cheetah and Lion Rampart  (5,5/1) and Black Cheetah and Questioning  (6,5/1)

#     Race 4   Horses 5 and 11 is owned by Gaynor Rupert - so I may back them

#     Race  6    I ma gouin t bet on Double Grand S lam - but take a coverin g bet on Silver Ssanctuary - rodden by Murphy - anote Gaynor Rupert owed horse

#     Race 7    Stick to the 3 horses I gave - my main bet would be on Snow Pilot

Say Mike, a 2yr colt sold for a record price of $2.8m at yesterdays Magic Millions, today that record was broken by a Japanese trainer who paid $3.2m for a 2yr old filly.

Denny

As far a I know the Ruperts bought two Champion Stallions from USA owners  for breeding purposes and te rumour is they paid $5 million for each of the two.

By the way I had a very successful Kings Plate and the day before in Fairview racing.   Before the start of Race 1 in Fairview I made a bet - but had no money elft in m betting account afte layin g a double onthe first two races.    fter the two days racing I had R2 800 in that account.    Since then I lost part of the money.though and am at R1 300 at present.    -
