8 Jeandre Rudolph: Has been absolutely superb since joining the franchise and Rudolph once again put in a fantastic showing. Carried hard in traffic and also did plenty of great work at the breakdown, both stealing the ball and slowing it down. 8

Jan 05, 2026, 19:46

Nope best 8 was Roos followed by Manu Tsituka of the Sharks

Jan 05, 2026, 20:13

Nope Rudolph was far more effective than Roos….on the day.

Jan 05, 2026, 20:37

Rudolph is a journeyman who hit a bit of form of late...good but not great.

Jan 05, 2026, 20:52

Nope Roos was better as was Manu

Jan 05, 2026, 21:13

Rugby Planet says that Rudolph’s form is on the rise and that he might be on the Bok radar.

How true the “Bok radar” claim is, we won’t really know for sure, given how media speculation works.

He was definitely better than Roos on Saturday, especially with his carries in traffic.

Roos still tends to run like a “berserker with a very red face”, straight into contact, but he doesn’t punch holes the way Jasper Wiese does.

He’s not doing himself any favours playing like that. He should rather focus on linking with the backline and attacking space. Brute force is not his forte.

So I don’t know whether Roos’s stock with Erasmus has improved, but Jasper Wiese, Elrigh Louw, and Cameron Hanekom seem to have the inside track.

Jan 05, 2026, 21:20

He turns 32 soon there is no way Rudolph will be on the Bok radar

Besides Roos….. Hanekom, Elrigh Louw, Horn, Manu Tsituka and Augustus will be ahead of him

Jan 05, 2026, 21:31

Well let's put it this way….the rugby scientists who gave Willemse a 6 on Saturday and think Dud Toit is the greatest player in the history of rugby gave Rudolph and 8. Or put another way, the guy who gave Rudolph an 8 gave Roos a 7.

Jan 05, 2026, 21:35

Francke Horn is an excellent player, but Erasmus has shown zero interest in him.

In my opinion, Horn is far better than both Tsituka brothers and Augustus “Trokkie”.

Another thing counting against Roos’s Springbok career is the fact that Kolisi has been doing quite well at 8 for the Sharks.

So Erasmus might simply use him if Wiese, Elrigh, or Hanekom are not available.

It’s highly unlikely that all of them will be unavailable at the same time, though.

Jan 05, 2026, 21:53

Horn was invited to the Bok alignment camp so he is not totally in the dark

Manu Tsituka is better than Horn

Jan 05, 2026, 22:17

"Nope best 8 was Roos followed by Manu Tsituka of the Sharks"

Hahahahahaha!

Geez, Dave.

There is absolutely no way you watched the games and have that opinion. Rudolf was colossal. Probably the best forward over all out of the 4 Saffa teams this weekend.

Ruan Venter was also very good...which I'm sure you're happy to hear. His star is for sure on the rise. And beware if he does continue to get better. I'm so glad because he faded at the end of last season but has hit straps with some gusto this year. Pity he got sent off because he was owning the field.

Jan 05, 2026, 22:33

I watched - plenty of hussle and bustle from the one trick pony Rudolph but not as impactful as Roos in general play and that try

Same with Manu who was excellent with his two tries - I love this guy

Ruan Venter was ok until his card - nothing stand out - Butch loves him

Jan 06, 2026, 00:15

Watch the offload Venter produces at minute 30 as he simultaneously splatters Bongi and Tshituka. Now that’s what I expect of Dud.

Jan 06, 2026, 00:27

Venter has a long way to go before he even gets to sniff the great PSDT’s boots

I still scratch my head at your anti PSDT - it is literally the worst rugby call ever

Jan 06, 2026, 02:34

You may sniff boots Dave, I don’t.

Jan 06, 2026, 06:22

I still can't believe how massive Venter is. 198cm and 120kgs...yet he doesn't play like a lanky guy that is easily cut down.

He hits like a shorter stockier man but has the levers and smarts to offload.

If he maintains his current form he'll be in the Boks this year.

I doubt he could be a like-for-like swap for PSDT but coming around the corner, he injures people that try to stop him. And he's not yet in his prime.

BTW, when is Hanekom back? Elrigh's injury was horrendous and he'a back already. I didn't think Hanekom's was a year-out injury but that's almost how long he's been out for now. I wanna see Captain America on the field again :(

Jan 06, 2026, 21:42

I’m guessing Venter is heavier than 120kg and looks more square than lanky - in the Vermeulen, Jason Jenkins or Cobus Wiese mould

Hanekom is still recovering from his hamstring injury - latest return date is late Jan

Jan 06, 2026, 22:09

I watched Elrigh Louw during the game and he was a bit underwhelming. Pity. I quite liked him pre-injury. Hopefully he'll step up next time out but right now I would have him behind the likes of Ruan Venter, the du Preez twins or the Tshituka brothers in the race to be PSdT's long-term replacement.

Add Cobus Wiese to that list. I know he's mainly a lock but so was PSdT and in terms of size and sheer physicality, he's the closest thing we have to a like-for-like replacement for PSdT.

Evan Roos also a #7 option if Jasper Wise or Cameron Hanekom is in the #8 jersey.

Plenty of options. None of them remotely close to PSdT yet.

Jan 07, 2026, 08:01

Yeah, Elrigh had been playing with himself. I think it'll take a while before he trusts his knee 100%. That injury was bloody horrible. I say this without having actually watched. I can't watch that sort of thing...so to tell me why happened haha

Cobus Wiese was bloody good and I'm not sure why Rassie discarded him. He's a favourite of mine.

But ja, if Venter plays the second half of the season like he has the first, then nobody will keep him out of the Boks. I'm just happy the Lions are using him in the way that he was born for...to hurt and embarrass the opposition. So many times last season they would be on the opposition line and all that was needed was to give him the ball at pace, but they just never did. This season they constantly using him in that way, at pace, and then he looks to offload as well...which is exactly what I wanted to see. Very chuffed.

Jan 07, 2026, 08:08

Weirdly, no Dave.

Venter is 198 and 120kgs...doesn't look at all like a been pole and doesn't run like one. As I mentioned, he runs and hits like a shorter and stockier man. He's as wide as he is tall. Just a perfect specimen really.

Jan 07, 2026, 15:31

Mozart cannot be serious - in order of effectiveness of the SA 8's on Satirday I would rate thenm a follows:-

1 Roos

2 Horn

3 Tsituka

4 Rudoloph,

Despite the BS spreading Roos wa in the winning side and scored a top class matchwinning try in the process,

Rudolph is absically an extesion of the Tight 5 and that is not acceptable anymore.

Jan 07, 2026, 21:32

Not according to the experts you always believe….Rudolph had the top player rating.

Jan 07, 2026, 21:56

Media jounalism are not necessarily experts, I rather believve what real experts asy and what style of ru gby is ben g developed and used at present,
