Came across this article https://rugby365.com/opinion/second-phase/why-this-bok-made-the-u23-world-xv/

Shocking to think that Willemse is on there at 15, but also that we don't have any decent young talent being used or brought into the bok setup.

Instead we have Grant Williams that is the sharks 4th scrumhalf.

What is Rassie doing,  No Evan Roos, No Jan Herik Wessels, Tyrone Green to name a few.

If we continue with our  current squad we will be back where De Villiers and Meyer left us. To be fair to Meyer, he had no young players to pick because of the insistence of picking the WC 2007 team and not blooding proper talent.

Rassie need to catch a wake up, we might be okay in the next world cup but it will go down really fast if we don't bring our young stars through

No new talent….no new tactics….3rd in the RC…..Berrygate. It’s been a bad year for the Harrassistas.

But the lack of any new talent in effectively the first year post the WC is really remarkable. Of the 24 players on the squad for the Pom test Wiese is the only player whose first test was in 2021. That amounts to 1 new squad player over 2 years, because we missed 2020 with the Chicken run.

Does anybody see this?

No one really knows what R&N is planning....but the lack of new established players is a major concern. I don’t think that we are alright for WC , as the conservative player selection backed up by conservative gameplan, we are in more trouble then we actually realize. Besides teams are waking up to our desperate grinding style of Rugby and winning. Also the obvious refusal on the part of R&N to get a specialist attack/backline coach, has made us predictable and one dimensional.

I agree Saffex...but very unfortunately as you can see by your list, only 2 players were picked by the R&N regime and the rest squandered For some unexplainable reason.

3 players

Dec 06, 2021, 23:35

Well if it was an under 25 side then more players would feature

Rickus!!!

2 new players a year will give 8 players over 4 years and 16 over 8 years...and it won't be only 2 evey year...we don't need to replace the whole team at once, but we do need to build depth in a few crucial positions.

ja, these are all good players but you would think that we have had at least 4 player under 23 with 10 caps.

Fassi and Willemse are both competing for the 15 jersey. Willemse had a  blinder in his first professional season for the stormers but he is a selfish player when it come to attack.

So I would have tried other like Green and given Fassi more game time.

But after the implosion of the championship, the coaching team have become ultra conservative.

Then, we also have to realise that the boks tries to attack like a sevens team, living off turn over ball.

The players above are all talented but a few test matches would have give them extra confidence and help them become better players.

Look at the players England used during the autumn international, and they won all of their games

  • 15 Freddie Steward 21
  • 10 Marcus Smith 22
  • 8 Tom Curry 23
  • 2 Jamie Blamire 23
  • 1 Bevan Rodd 23

At least 5 players making up the spine of the team all under 23 with hardly any caps who beat the world champions.
Don't forget how poor they did in the 6 nations but have now been able to give these guys confidence by beating the number 1 team and current world cup holders.

We should have seen the likes of Tyrone Green, Fassi, Willemse, Jan Henrik Wessels, Moerat to name a few.

Well there is no way they should have beaten to Boks we completely dominated them but have ourselves to blame for far too many missed opportunities

Eddie has not changed his side in years, this is the first time

Our side right now has virtually no room for the inclusion of new players

Willie was not great but not done yet, but Fassi possibly should have been given a run.

There is no place for Green given we have Mapimpi, Kolbe and Nkosi on the wing

At centre de Allende and Am are going nowhere, with Kriel and Frans as backup. Frans needs to be replaced and that will be Willemse

At 10 it’s Pollard and Jantjies so no movement there

Same at 9 where we have Faf, Reinach and Jantjies - no movement

Props are covered with Kitshoff, Ox, Thomas, Wilco Louw, Malherbe, Nyakane and Koch

Hookers have Marx, Mbonambi and Dweba - no movement

Locks have Eben, Lood and RG - there is room to move on from powder puff Mostert and useless Orie

Loosies are covered in Vermeulen, Kolisi, Kwagga, PSDT, Wiese and v Staaden

So reality dictates that while some youngsters have been brought into our squad there is no place for them in the starting side. The only potential spot is on the bench replacing Frans Steyn.

Willie and Vermeulen maybe in the very near future but that’s it.

With RG back, Mostert will move out of the match 23

The Bok side is established with players in their prime other than Vermeulen and Frans - they are ranked number 1 so still getting things mostly right so there is little room for change

For me the squad is spot on other than the likes of Frans, Mostert and Orie

‘Dominated England’….in your dreams. The stats were almost 50/50. The only thing we dominated was the penalty count and the scrums which gave us the penalty count. If the Poms find a tighthead it’s  going to be an uphill battle.

For the Boks to have one player in the World U 23 selection and only  one player in the alternatives tells you what a disastrous job Harrassmiss has done with succession planning.

Dec 07, 2021, 17:51

Oh crap we were far better than England we dominated them physically in every department - we should have beaten them by 15 plus

8 points missed at poles and 3 tries coughed up

We dominated them as much as we did in the WC final but failed to convert that domination into points in that second half

Your take on the youngsters not selected is nonsense - who should be dropped in the Bok 23 for a youngster

Also that U23 side is hardly the measure given it has Willemse at 15, who let’s face it has done nothing there.
