New players that are impressing

Between the URC and Champions Cup over the past few months, the following new players have impressed me

David Kriel - the Bulls fullback and sometimes wing who has also played a game or two at centre. Clearly versatile and has thar gift of breaking tackles. His best position is fullback in my opinion

Stravino Jacobs - the big powerful Bulls wing. He has shown pace, strength and a step. Bulls are not nearly playing him enough

Francois Klopper - the young Bulls tighthead looks a good prospect

Ruan Vermaak - the big physical Bulls lock who has taken over from the departed Walt Steenkamp. His physicality in his last two games has been very impressive, culminating in running into the Exeter captain and knocking him out - stole cold

Emmanuel Tsituka the younger brother of Vincent. The Lions 8 is all over the park and has plenty of skill and power. He just never stops

Henco v Wyk - can’t make my mind up about him. He started the season well making an impression hence my inclusion on this list but for the past few weeks has made little impression. I’m not convinced he is big enough to go to the next level. Very muscled up but a short guy. Punches above his weight, whatever that is

Emile v Heerden - has had a good few starts for the Lions now, with 7 on his back but often scrums down at lock. Looks a handy player, good skill and high work rate

Ntlabakayne - the massive Lions tighthead. For a fat guy he gets around and makes an impression. How good would he be if he lost all the blubber

Marnus Potgieter - the Sharks wing who’s primary position is 13. He has been very good in the last few weeks, showing plenty of power and speed. Play him more at 13 when Am needs a rest

Boeta Chamberlain - the Shatks 10 who has moved to 15 has been very elusive with ball in hand. His best spot is 10, play him ahead of Bosch

Buthelezi - I like this guy, has good strength, breaks tackles - plays 8 but should play 6 where he was employed in the Bok A side

Dan du Plessis at 28 he is hardly new but has been in amazing form for the Stormers this season. Has made so many good clean breaks

Dayamani - the Stormers 8 has been on fire this season, hard to ignore him for higher honours but we just have too many great loosie prospects out there

Dan Du Plessis is probably the stormers best centre at 12, but can also cover 12 if needed. The Stormers backline functions better defensively when both Dan and Nel operate together.

Dan is actually 27. Been around for ages, but struggled with injuries. Same as Jean Luc.

The last time I saw Jean Luc was way back when and he had an absolute blinder in Super Rugby. But looks like he is finding his way back.

You have left out Hartzenberg, been shifting between wing and 13, but only 19. Greate future ahead. Although have been found wanting in wet conditions and being exposed to the cross kicks coming up too early.

Have to agree on Henco, technically brilliant player, positional play as well as his covering is insane. Not seen him slip any tackles, but think he can crack the bok side.

Yes Hartzenberg looks good, needs to bulk up a bit

Haven't seen all of them, but a lot of good Talent coming thru...let's hope some of them atleast, make it into Bok setup.

Stravino Jacobs is very talented....makes clean breaks at will....haven't seen much of Bernard vd linde....and wessels is super strong....a good team.

Jan 23, 2023, 22:11

Jacobs should get more game time for the Bulls but I guess they do have Kriel, Moodie and Arendse as first choices

Bernard vd Linde is a quality 9, he is going places

Dave

I have been impressed by Wolhuter at flyhalf when I saw him play before he was injured and out o the game or the full year.    He came back to play at flyhalf on Saturday and was exceptionally good in my opinion.   Think he is an exciting prospect.

Roos was back in the same game again and was exceptional again.   I still think he should eb teh Springboks number 8.

Yeah he looks handy at 10 time will tell

I much prefer Sacha at 10

Any news on Jurenzo Julius?

Heard he had signed with the Sharks but nothing since then. Definitely could be one for the future at 13.

Jan 24, 2023, 20:44

Yes agreed Jurenzo is a great talent....strong Runner, clean breaks and rock solid Defence....happy for Kade Wolhuter very good Distributor and all round good Flyhalf....hope he stays by the Stormers.

Jan 24, 2023, 22:11

Yes he is at the Sharks, I guess he will feature in their U20 side

All those good youngsters have been signed locally

Inside centre Bruce Sherwood from Bishops is meant to be with the Stormers as is huge lock Patrick Kitete from Outeniqua

The very impressive lock from Grey Bloem JF v Heerden is with the Bulls

This lad is going to be another Eben

Grey Bloem coach said he is the toughest/hardest player he has ever coached

Jan 24, 2023, 22:43

Wow all this talent....very good that they signed locally....I still feel that entrance into Bok Setup is still to hard and a plethora of good ones slips thru the net.... favoritism and bad judgement plays a big Role in us losing talent....money to, but most of our Rugby players have a strong desire to play for the Boks.

Jan 24, 2023, 23:57

If these youngsters don’t get picked and invested in they will go abroad

Let’s hope that does not happen to the 4 players mentioned above

A centre partnership of Sherwood and Julius is unbelievably mouth watering

As is the lock pairing of Kitete and v Heerden

Seriously gifted players

The future is bright for SA rugby: great quota teams to come.

Dont know if comedy shows exist in SA but here a concept for one.

Guess who a quota player by reading the name. Wont be easy and would part between people who know and those who dont.

Jan 26, 2023, 22:33

Dan du Plessis’ try last Saturday was top drawer and Roos showed tremendous power getting over the line.

Jan 26, 2023, 23:11

Dan has been in such good form this season

One of those players we might have missed a trick on

At 27 where has he been?

Injured yes but……

There are so many Dan’s out there that miss the international boat

So many names come to mind

Roos is next level
