By the end of the Welsh test on Saturday

The majority have been good selections but some poor

Next year he needs to do a better job of weeding out the old and bringing in the new

We have seen Vermeulen retire, Deon Fourie, Kitshoff, Faf and Lood out injured and no use made of Nyakane or Orie.

Next year we need to see the squad move on from Willie, Mapimpi, Reinach, Koch and Mostert

We also need to lose the likes of Jean Kleyn, Moerat and v Staaden

The 50 odd Id like to see him use next year are:

Fullbacks: Fassi and Jordan Hendrikse

Wings: Kolbe / Arendse / Green / Edwil vd Merwe

Outside centres: Am / Kriel / Jurenzo Julius / Moodie / Henco v Wyk

Inside centres: de Allende / Esterhuizen / Willemse / David Kriel / Ethan Hooker

Flyhalves: Pollard / Libbok / Sacha / Masuku

Scrumhalves: Williams / Hendrikse / Papier / Nohamba / vd Bergh

Looseheads: Ox / Steenkamp / Wessels / Mchunu

Hookers: Marx / Mbonambi / Dweba / Grobelaar / AH Venter

Tightheads: Malherbe / Thomas / Wilco / Sadie / Hanro Jacobs

Locks: Eben / RG / Jenkins / Ruan Vermaak / Ruben v Heerden / Cobus Wiese

Loosies: Kolisi / Kwagga / Buthelezi / PSDT / BJ Dixon / Ruan Venter / Vincent Tsituka / Ludwig / Elrigh Louw / Roos / Wiese / Hanekom / Manu Tsituka

Saffex, I did sit and think for a while about players you've omitted but to be honest, I couldn't think of a single one. Good list.

I have to agree Rooi, never seen Dave ever drop a player, if anything, he'll go find a school boys player and put him in there.

However, I love that about the guy, he knows how to find the talent and bring names forward I never heard of, but most of them are pretty good.

I have one question, so you decided to ditch Moerat?

He had no impact for me at all this year or ever. I think he is there on reputation and the fact that his family has some political influence in the cape.

Our biggest problem is whether we can live without an Eben like player. Maybe we can. Once in a generation player.

We were just very lucky, we have Mark Andrews, Bakkies Botha and then Eben. All World Cup winners

I thought oif a player you could add, Saffex, but I will admit I'm basing this on reviews of other people rather than anything I've seen recently . . . but JJ van der Mescht is apparently playing very well for Stade Francais and I was a big fan when he was still with the Sharks.

Last time I saw vd Mecht which was about a year ago he was soooo overweight. Hopefully he has sorted himself out as he is a talent

As for Moerat - he has potential and has looked good for the Stormers at times but not replicated that at test level but hardly surprising as he has to live off test scraps like Roos, Wilco, Thomas etc

I’m not giving up on him at all but he needs to prove himself after his long lay off. Next season will be big for him

There are players like JF v Heerden, Corne Rahl, Francious Klopper, Francke Horn, Theunissen, Dayamani, Rabs, Tambwe etc who would push. No point in 29 year olds Gelant and the du Preez twins I guess

Dave,

Great work, now if only Rassie will heed your selections we hope.
Libbok is the one that I think needs to be deleted as well. His missed point kicks are his downfall and he is not in the same class as the three others you have listed.

But credit to you for the effort.

Well, if Deon Fourie can debut at 37, there is still hope for the rest of the players. Who says 29 is too old. We've seen Rassie back the old guys.

But, you could see how much that team struggled during the World Cup. They guys were on empty int he World Cup final. They were in for a long grind, not as nice as the 2019 World Cup.

I think if we are looking for the next batch of players there is little point in looking at new 29 year olds like the du Preez twins for instance, especially considering we have so much young depth as loosies

Rassie definitely missed the boat with the du Preez twins - up there with Marx, Bismark with sheer strength

All fine and dandy having and exposing players to the highest level, however, I'd  like to see an elevation to our attacking play so as to gain full benefit from the abundance of talent available.

Thus far Tony Brown has failed to show a difference.

I give Rassie  a 7 for the year

Nov 22, 2024, 08:21

Denise, you mong...

The Bok backline is almost completely different each time they play.

Even with a settled a regular backline unit, it would still take time.

The way the team is constantly being changed up, it's basically impossible for Brown's influence to shine through other in philosophical or mindset terms.

This year is likely an exercise in seeing who Brown wants as his regular starters come 2025.

And that's where you'll see the difference.

Nov 22, 2024, 09:39

Well a whole season as a exercise is a waste if you ask me…

Yes a settled Backline I suppose can have more routine in Attack plays….

But surely all Backline Players, the incumbents and subs gets drilled in this so called new " wunderbar “ attack plays ..

So in the end of the day it doesn’t matter who plays, they should have the same uniform attacking plays/structures drilled in??

You do see a bit more ball in hand routines , but still moves more laterally across the playing field.

Against the Pumas in the second test, we saw Fassi,s run penetrate nicely up the middle of the field for a try…..and also Jessica…

But against the stronger sides the older routines of predominantly Forward play combined with our Kicking game, hunting for penalties is still our go to move.

Yes it will take time indeed, especially if they train that side of our gameplay at the pace of a snail.

Then we also need fresh new players of this list above, like David Kriel and Moodie in the Midfield, to join up with SFM…..

these players in my opinion have better skill sets to accommodate extensive structured Attack plays.

Nov 22, 2024, 10:43

I’ve definitely seen some changes to our attack during this season

It’s a marathon not a sprint and as Brown is on record saying - he is not there to change how the Boks play but to just make them better at how they attack

Nov 22, 2024, 11:01

Ja, it is hard to be a coach. I like the Du Preeze twins but then you have PSDT and Vermeulen / Wiese.

What we also saw is that Rassie likes utility players. Players that he can swap during the game. We saw Mostert play 7 and then go to 5 when Lood was gassed.

Then we look at our 10/15 with Willemse being able to cover many positions as well as Sasha. Am is playing more at 12 these days.

I think he likes to have a bench and players on the field that can almost cover 3 positions. So if you are just a specialist then it will be harder these days.

Our Rassies crop of loose forwards, who should he have dropped? I don't agree with all of his selections. Kwagga is only an impact player, but always plays poor when he starts. His size counts against him

Actually praise must go towards Jake White for Discovering and building players like:

Steenekamp, Johan Grobbelaar, Rediscovering Wilco Louw, Elrigh Louw, Ruan Nortje, Cameron Hanekom , David Kriel, Jan Hendrik Wessels, even Van Staden ///

More guys that will come is Reinhardt Ludwig, Francois Kloppers , Matanzima , JF Van Heerden , Mpilo Gumede, Ruan Vermaak, Cobus Wiese.

All players that is shining under White and that Rassie can use. Jake knows how to spot talent and build them up!

Leinster is about the only team that can interchange players but that is because they invest so much into their grass roots and local clubs. Knowing when to give players exposure and when to tell them to spend a season in the bush leagues so they can come back stronger.

This is the first time in the modern era that we've had a stable bok management team. Yes, I question what Deon Davids and stick are doing there, but Rassie is the main stay.

We'll have him at least for another 3 years. So he would have been with the boks for about 10 years.

Then, his been coaching the old guard back in the day at the cheetahs and the WP under 21 team. So he is really invested in the bok player development in the long term. It might not look great right now, but give it another season or two. Sasha coming back, Hendrikse maturing and who knows which talent gets unearthed or which journey man comes full circle.

I don't like this stop start, but we have an 83% win record and it could have been much higher if Rassie didn't gamble. But we are in a great place. All of these players can make the next world cup, even at 36. The only player in current squad is probably Le Roux. But don't forget, Frans Steyn nearly made it and could have been the only player in History with 3 world cup medals.

It will probably take another season, but Rassie wants 50 players to come in at a moments notice and just slot in with out a dip in a teams form.

As the saying go, the perfect coaches team only exist on paper. Players get injured or drop in form, but if you have 50 players that are wold class, that is next level.

We just need 3 world class players in every position for that.

We already have that in the pack. Our backline, we have the 10's centres and wings now. 9 is still questionable.

Nov 23, 2024, 13:33

" But we are in a great place. All of these players can make the next world cup, even at 36 " Ooooh my goodness, just throw in the towel now already…

We have all this young inform talent, but let’s drop them all and keep building with the old…Willie will be 38 perfect !
