I was walking to the French bakery in my small city yesterday morning to get a few macarons ( not Macron HasBeen, down boy). Walking past the Opera House , O Sole Mio rang out over speakers in the square, sung magnificently by a young tenor. They do this on market days and it brings these great arias alive in a special way. People stopped to listen, everybody was smiling
I walked on further when the typical old Florida couple accosted me. ‘Where’s the farmers’ market’ was their anxious question.
Needless to say they were walking in exactly the opposite direction to the market. I quickly pointed out the general direction and they asked the usual question as to where I was from. ‘South Africa’ I said, ‘Cape Town actually’. I find that people relate more to CT than the country.
But this was different, the old man beamed and he said ‘ah, rugby’. It seems winning the second WC has finally established South Africa as the world’s rugby Mecca.
