New Zealand Teams

Crusaders

The team played  four games  thus far and  the results were as follows:-

*   Blues             -    won the game  24 -  22

*   Hurricanes   -    won  the game  38 -  22

*    Reds              -    won the game   22 -  12

*    Chiefs           -    won the game   57 -  28

*    Highlanders  -   Game cancelled due to Christchurch massacre

*    Waratahs      -   Lost the game   12 - 20

*    Hurricanes    -  Won the game   32  -  8

*    Brumbies      -   Won the game   36  -  14

*    Highlanders  -   Won the game   48  - 17

The team is by some distance the best performing team in Super Rugby this year

The Hurricanes

The team played  five games  thus far and  the results were as follows:-

*    Waratahs      -     won the game  20 – 19

*    Crusaders     -     lost the game   22  -  38

*    Brumbies     -      won the game  43 – 13

*    Highlanders  -    won the game   25 -  22

*    Chiefs            -    drew the game  23 -  23

*    Stormers      :     won the game   34  - 28

*    Crusaders    -     lost the game       8  -  32

*    Highlanders  -   won the game    31  -  28

A rather spotty record with  1 wide win, 4  narrow wins, a draw and  2 bad losses

The Highlanders

The team played    games  thus far and  the results were as follows:-

*    Chiefs          -     won the game   30  -  27

*     Reds           -     won the game    36 – 31

*     Rebels       -     lost the game      19 -  24

*     Hurricanes -    lost he game       22  - 25

*    Crusaders   -     Game cancelled due to Christchurch massacre

*     Blues          -     lost the game      26  -  33

*     Hurricanes  -   lost the game      28  -  31

*    Crusaders    -   lost the game       17  -   48

A questionable record  with  two narrow wins and four narrow losses.   Not convincing at all.

The Blues

Played  four games thus far and the results were as follows:-

*    Crusaders    -    lost the game      22  -  24

*    Sharks          -    lost the game         7  -  26

*     Jaguares     -     lost  the game     19  -  23

*     Sunwolves -     won the game     28  -  20

*     Highlanders  -  won the game     33  -  26

*     Stormers       -  won the game     24  -    9

*     Waratahs      -   won the game    32  -  29

*    Chiefs             -   lost the game      29  -  33

The Blues  won  4 games well, but lost 3 games narrowly and a third game  badly.   For the first time in many years the Blues is now in the top 8 on the overall log.   a team always to watch out for,

The Chiefs

The team played  five  games  thus far and  the results were as follows:-

 *    Highlanders   -   lost the game    27  -  30

*     Brumbies       -   lost the game    17  -  54

*     Sunwolves     -   lost the game    15 -   30

*     Crusaders      -   lost the game     28 -  57

*     Hurricanes    -    drew the game  23  -  23

*     Bulls               -    won the game    56 -  20

*     Jaguares        -     won the game   30  -  27

*     Blues              -    won the game    33  -  29

The worst performance of an NZ team in many years - in the last two games showed massive improvement and beat the disgustingly poor Bulls by a huge margin.  They narrowly beat the Jaguares ibn their last game before a bye.

Australian Conference

Rebels

Played four games and the results were as follows:-

*   Brumbies         -        won the game      34  -  27

*   Highlanders     -        won the game      24  -  19

*   Brumbies         -         won the game     29  -  26

*   Lions                 -        lost the game       33  -  36

*   Sharks               -        lost the game       14  -  28

*   Reds                 -         won the game      32  -  13

*   Sunwolves       -          won the game     42   -  15

*   Stormers          -          lost the game      24  -  41

The  best  record of any Australian team thus far – how they lost the Lions game remains a mystery   They lost track against the Sharks.  This team needs a real discipline - they tto often shoot themselves in the foot because of openalties.

Brumbies

 Played six games and the results were as follows:-

 *  Rebels             -         lost the game       27  -  34

*   Chiefs               -        won the game      54  -  17

 *  Hurricanes      -        lost the game        13  -  43

*   Rebels              -        lost the game       26  -  29

*   Waratahs        -        won the game      19  -  13

*    Reds              -         Lost the game     14  -  36

*   Crusaders       -         lost the game       14  -  28

*    Lions             -         won the game      31  -  20

A spotty record at best – 5 losses and 2 wins indicates as such

Waratahs

 Played five games and the results were as follows:-

*   Hurricanes    -         lost the game        19  -  20

*   Sunwolves    -         won the game       31  -  30

*   Reds              -         won the game       28  -   17

*   Brumbies     -         lost the game         13  -   19

*   Crusaders     -          won the game       20  -   12

*   Sunwolves   -          lost the game         29  -  31

*   Blues           -           lost the game        29  -  32

Inconsistencies noticeable -   actually not convincuing victories at all.  Played a massive game against an unconvincing Crusader outfit and surprisingly beat them.   Two subsequent losses followed that one.

Sunwolves

 Played six games and the results were as follows:-

*    Sharks          -       lost the game          10  -  45

*    Waratahs    -       lost the game          30  -   31

*    Chiefs          -       won the game       30  -   15

*   Blues         -        lost the game          20  -  28

*   Reds          -        lost the game          31  -  34

*   Lions         -        lost the game          24  -  37

*   Waratahs   -        won the game         29  -  31

*   Rebels       -        lost the game          15  -   42

One very good result,  surprise win and showed fighting spirit in 4 of the other 6 games

Reds

Played in  four games thus far and the results were as follows:-

*    Highlanders -    lost the game       31  -  36

*    Crusaders     -    lost the game       12  -  22

*    Waratahs     -     lost the game       17  -  28

*    Sunwolves    -    won the game      34  -  31

*    Brumbies      -    won the game      36  -  14

*    Rebels          -     lost the game       13  -  32

*   Stormers       -     won the game      24  -   12

*    Bulls            -    lost the game        17  -   32

Was competitive in the games against NZ teams and even against the Waratahs.   Bwegiining to show real improvement - especially against the Brumbies.    Very good in against the disgustingly poor Stormers

Bulls

Played four games and the results were as follows:-

*   Stormers          -        won the game      40  -   3

*   Jaguares           -        lost the game       12  -  27

*   Lions                -         won the game      30  -  12

*   Sharks              -        won the game       37 -  14

*   Chiefs               -        lost the game        20  -  56

*   Sharks              -        won the game       16  -  19

*   Jaguares          -        lost the game        20  -  22

*    Reds                -        won the game       32  -  17

Their performance against the Chiefs in Round 5 was the worst in years  by a local team - even the poor Kings would have put up a better game than the Bulls did,    There is a total lack if leadership in the  team.

Lions

 Played five games and the results were as follows:-

 *  Jaguares          -        won the game      25  -  16

*   Stormers         -        lost the game        17 -   19

 *  Bulls                 -        lost the game        12  -  30

*   Jaguares          -        won the game       47  -  39

*   Rebels             -        won the game       36  -  33

*   Sunwolves      -        won the game       37  -  24

*    Sharks            -        lost the game          5  -   42

 *   Brumbies       -        lost the game        20  -  31

 They won 3 games – but two of those were difficult  with fualts aplenty,   Will have to up their performance level.   Their defense is not up to standard    Disastrously  poor game against the Sharks.

Stormers

 Played four games and the results were as follows:-

*   Bulls               -        lost the game          3   -  40

*   Lions             -         won the game       19  -   17

*   Sharks          -         won the game        16  -   11

*   Jaguares      -         won the game         35  -    8

*   Hurricanes      -         lost game               28  -  34

*    Blues              -       lost the game            9   -  24

*    Reds               -       lost the game          12  -   24

*    Rebels            -      won the game          41  -  24

Was disgraced in their first game – but in subsequent games showed some real fighting spirit.  That fighting spirit was lost against the Blues and the Reds.   The worst SA team by some distance.

Sharks

 Played five  games and the results were as follows:-

*    Sunwolves      -     won the game         45  -  10

*    Blues               -      won the game        26  -    7

*   Stormers       -        lost the game         11  -   16

*   Bulls              -        lost the game         14   -  37

*    Rebels         -         won the game        27  -   14

*    Bulls             -        lost the game          16  -   19

*   Lions             -         won the game          9  -   42

*   Jaguares      -         lost the game          17  -   51

Three  very good results –and showed fighting spirit in one of the  other  games,  but lost very badly against the Bulls

Jaguares

Played in  five  games thus far and the results were as follows:-

*    Lions             -    lost the game       16  -   25

*    Bulls              -    won the game      27  -  12

*    Blues             -    won the game      23  -  19

*    Lions             -     lost the game       39  -  47

*    Stormers      -     lost the game         8  -  25

*    Chiefs           -     lost the game       27  -  30

*    Bulls             -     won the game      20  -   22

*    Jaguares      -     won the game      51  -    17

I think the New Zealand teams will get stronger as the tournament progresses, as it is a world cup year and some test players have been rested and will look to peak as the season goes on.

The main issue with the New Zealand teams is their forward are not that good against teams with strong packs, and that have a territorial kicking game behind a dominant pack.

I expect New Zealand will lose many games in SA, but SA teams will lose most games in New Zealand

The overdoing of local derbies is ruining the tournament. I think most Australian and New Zealand teams will lose most of their games in SA this year.

Sharkbok

I am still busy with the information on games thus far and posted the above because I am afraid load shedding is always a threat

There are some big name AB players  who did not play - but also big names who had and did not show up as the best performers around.

I still have some work to do on this one - so to the top with this item.

Mar 22, 2019, 10:30

I have updated this after the Blues beat the Highlanders as expected,

Mar 22, 2019, 13:21

I see New Zealand are continuing their policy to rest players in a world cup year. Many are being kept in cotton wool so they can peak for the World Cup.

On the other hand SA players have lots of local derbies mooring themselves into oblivion. Some have just returned from Japan, and where ever else.

Mar 22, 2019, 14:16

There are two issues here - the first being the resting of AB players,   I think it is more an excuse than fact.   The fact is there are only two players of the AB's that has not played in Super Rugby thus far.  The others have played in most games and they are getting from time to time to miss a game - on the basis of them being rested for the WC.   Fact is it seems to me looking at all matches played that it is more of an excuse to cover for the rather dubious performances of the various NZ franchises - bar the Crusaders - in the series and also a cover for the under-performance of the  AB players when they actually played,

As to Reid and Whitelock they were  not all that good in the tests last year - fact is they were rather insignificant,  Whether resting would help them in playing this year remains a wide open question.

The second issue is whether resting players in Super Rugby about three  to six months before the WC would help the player performances in the WC.   Meyer tried it in 2015 and all that happened was that the elderly players generally failed in the series,  So will it work better this year for the AB's?

Fact is between  end of June and the start of the WC near the end of September the teams will only have three tests in the RC and maybe two more warm up games - ie only 5 games in near to three months,  .  That allows for ample resting.

The Chiefs are my favourite Kiwi team ... and I'm pleasd to see them doing a little better. I hope it continues.

It seems that most teams are struggling a little on their return from a bye. I hope the Chiefs can build on the momentum.

We'll see.

The Lions are off down under ... I'm not expecting much from them. They were pathetic against the Sharks. In truth I was expecting this last season already.

Swys isn't a head coach's backside.

Things are going to get a lot worse.

CC

I think the above would be useful as a guide when making predictions as to upcoming games and try and update it after every week.

My problem with the Lionns goes much deeper.  The problem starts with their locks and even their loosie combination.   From there it goes to their  flyhalf - I never rated him in the past and under pressure - which he often is at present - he is useless.

They have no idea how to select a center combination either,   They flounder around like it si unbelievable.    I cannot understand why they cannot find a center at 12 when Vorster is not available - \Mapoe is useless at 12 and worse at 5.

I am afraod even the weak and useless Brumbies will beat the Lions in Round 9/

Apr 08, 2019, 08:12

It comes down to a head coach who wants to be in the lime light but doesn't have the ability to lead a side properly.

Screaming and shouting at half time doesn't do it.

His people skills suck ... he inspires no one ... he should be demoted to where he was and a proper coach brought in.

Not everyone can be a chief.
