Time for a coaching shake up in SA

I know our teams just got 4 out of 4 but it is still a far cry of where we should be if we really have the "talent" that we believe we have.

This is now the 4th season of watching the Lions not accomplishing any real progress nor making it hard for teams to come play in SA. The Saarks and bools were the first SA teams to beat Ulster and Munster on their home grounds. Yet, we have the wee lions, bools, Saarks and WP just rolling over on some days.

If you look at the administration and coaching setup I wonder whether it is time to bring back our coaching talent to SA.

The two coaches that spring to mind is Van Graan who had a somewhat good stint at Munster and now has put Bath at the top of the log two seasons in a row. Then we have Franco Smit who is no stranger. He took a Scottish team and managed to win the URC against all odds and against Jake Whites bools at fortress Loftus. Then Plumtree has done nothing for the Saarks and they limp from one game to another.

Neither am I impressed with Dobbo with each season the Stormers are slipping from winning the comp, to final knock out to semi final. It doesn't look like they'll get passed the quarters this year.

I also want to see an administration shake up at most of these unions.

My thinking behind this is long term. Rassie is in the driving seat but the day will come sooner than we think that we'll have to replace him. I don't see stick or Deon Davids taking over. We need to pick one of our SA coaches but I would love to pick one that has experience and knows our local players. But White, Plumtree and Van Royen can't stay in the SA system

Sharks especially is way under-performing for what is probably the strongest SA side on paper.

What do you want to replace - I will not repalce Erasmus or his team based on self-opnion of people who hated him, fronm day one. H si the best coach SA ever had and he knows more about coaching. on test elvel than anyone else, There is no othe coach that can replace him at present and he will stay on as xcoach until 2027 ad even tereafte if the Springboks win another World Cup.

Where I agree with you are the Franchise level coaches. None of White, Plumtree and Dobson are up to standard, From a coaching perspecive I rate as the worst coach of the three,

White

Due to the ownership of the Bulls they were provided with a huge budget ample money to recruite players an especially those in Japan, France, the UK and Ireland. But when appoited as coach his first set of player recruits were largely amongst frwards nd included Mone Steyn as virtually the only backline player he recruited, In fact the other recruit he brought back was Goosen.

As long as the Bulls play "Jakeball" where backline play is regarded as defenders - not to be absued by atta king backline play. However, his worst probvlm is the way he select teams - tee is really no sense about that one. If the Bulls had proper coach the team would not struggle to win match es like the Bulls did during the past two matches,

Jake ha talente players coming from the junior rnaks - but if he pickes them occasionanally theya re not given any chance of showing their real talents. Before they can get real eperience tehya re dropped from he team only brought back months afterwards to play again.

In general White enver developed into a real intenational coach and that is why on test level he collected 2 trophies - one by deault since the op teams in 2007 - Austalia and New Zealand was out due to losing heir quarterfinal matches and S A aced Argentina in the se miand England in the final.

Plumtree

In 2012 Pumtree was a good coach for the Sharks and then the collape start t set in on his re-appointent he became worse and worse, I do not know why - but eh ket playing poor backline playes with no real idea as to backline play. He had three of the best three back triangal players available in SA at his disposal - but inside of that we have a case of one-dimensional and predictable players imainable and that ne utralizes backluine attacking play,

Plumtree should know what Broiwn knows so well as backline combined with loose forwards is the easiest way to score tries - but have doubts as to strategy leading too that.

Dobson

The worst of the three due to issues beyond his capacity is the fact that up until recently was under Administration and did not have the money to recruit better players, As a result the funding of the franchise was severely restricted and -

# the Stormers tried to retain better players like Kitshoff, Malherbe, Sacha and Willemse resulting in a situation where the other plaes even based on SA income levels were too low;

# the recruitment of players is a reaal joke, All they can get is have beens and never-have beens.

On the positive side an issue which is really important is the ccoching development prograsm Erasmus introduced - but is rarely dealt. Vrmeulen and a few other top players are helping in that program as well.

The Bools beat Leinster in Dublin to give the Stormers a home final...

Dobson has to go. The Stormers need to start playing smarter rugby. Sacha has almost singlehandedly saved their season. They were nowhere without him.

And Dobson chose to play him at 12!!!???

For me, the Stormers need to stop playing like they think they're the Harlem Globetrotters. Jake White has showed the way.

Keep the game calm and strangle them upfront, and then snipe when the chance presents itself. The Stormers have some of the best backs in SA. And some great forwards. Their problem is identity. And that's down to the coach.

The current Stompies chuck the ball around like they barely respect having it in their hands. And that IS the coach's fault. They're plying the way he allows them to play.

The moment Sacha and Willemse returned things changed. He literally needed two superstars to change his fortunes. While they were gone the entire team suffered from Galant syndrome...and it would not be the case if he didn't allow it.

Dobbo might be a nice guy, and he may have had some success, but he might also be drinking his own Kool-Aid a touch too much

Jake is fine. The Bulls can be dull but they lost some very key players and it hasn't stopped them picking up the intensity and discipline when it matters, which is now.

I have a feeling that you could get Dobbo to take 5 Bulls of his choosing and the results would not be too much different. But give Jake 5 stompies of his choosing and nobody is catching that Bulls side.

Plumtree is done. Get Ackerman in there ASAP.

The Lions problems are much more than coach deep. They have a lot to sort out, personnel being just one issue.

Dobbo is doing great at a bankrupt union...he would wipe the floor with JW if he had the Bools's budget...punching way above his weight...

Apr 27, 2025, 23:22

Umm the Stormers have a bunch of very good players in their squad.

And then there is what Swys did, which was to take a bunch of literally no namers and beat everybody by a mile.

Budget is just an excuse.

Compared to the other coaches in 2014 A ckerman and Swys were angels f light. Meyer was supersht on national level - while Coetzee was supershit in he case of the Stormers - White was effective fired by the Sharks for playing dead head rugby and Ludeke was no better for the Bulls, In that crowd Ackermann and Swys stood out as top class coaches - in the land of the blind cockeye is king,

I thing when Ackerman left the Lions to coach in japan Swys took pver - but then on doctors advice resigned as Lions coach because of health reasons. When Erasmus appointe him in a job with lesser pressure attached to it and he is still in that position as an appointee of SARU,
