Who we still want to see as Boks

For me thankfully we have given long overdue opportunities to the likes of Wilco Louw, Grobelaar, Thomas, Elrigh Louw and Fassi

Players that I still want to see involved are

Tyrone Green on the wing before England snap him up

Outside centres Jurenzo Julius and Henco v Wyk

Inside centre Ethan Hooker

Utility player David Kriel

Scrumhalves Papier and Nohamba

Locks Ruben v Heerden and Ruan Vermaak

Loosies Vincent Tsituka, Ludwig and Emmanuel Tsituka

Dave...we have three 9s a the moment. Do we really need to try another 2?

Be realistic.

At this point we almost want all the provincial players to be Boks.

You claim the coach is a genius. Let him do his thing. The squad should now be made smaller, not bigger. We simply can't experiment for ever. We have the best team, let's play that team for a period and win as much as possible.

We mostly already know who the replacements for the first string guys are. We don't need more information at this point. We need execution.

Marcel Theunissen is another guy that might perform. What about a Bruce Sherwood, Johnathan Roche and Luke Burger?

A Flyhalf that should definitely be tried out is Jurie Mathee . Solid in kicking success rate, good tactical kicker, good on attack and strong defender.

If Kade Wolhuter can stay injury free for a reasonable time, a player with heaps of talent.

" We mostly already know who the replacements for the first string guys are" who is the replacement for DDA? Or for Jessica?

What about Pieter Stef, Kolisi and Wiese if they are injured or retire?

Which locks will replace Eben, Mostert or RG if they are not available? Is Fassi now the regular 15 or what about Willemse?

Who will replace Reinach, Am? Who will be understudy to SFM or Pollard? Libbok is a liability not a solid pick? Then there is still players like Faf or kitshof….are they going to be replaced?

Solid replacements that has started more than once would be Elrigh Louw, Steenekamp, Grobbies, Thomas, Wilco, SFM and Nortje…..

It definitely would not hurt building more depth….the more the merrier..

Nov 25, 2024, 11:32

Reinach is past it and is already 34 he needs to go and Jayden Hendrikse needs to be more convincing to stay in the mix. His hands are letting him down at the base with the odd fumble - he needs to be more assertive there

So yes damn right we need to look at the two 9’s I mention as they have been our best domestic 9’s

Rassie is a genius but he is not perfect

His squad shows no youthful investment in centres and to a lesser extent lock - he has selected two younger locks in Moerat and Nortje but they are the wrong two - it should be Ruben v Heerden and Ruan Vermaak

And we simply have to cap the Tsituka brothers, they are next level. Same applies to Tyrone Green

Rassie needs to move on from 33 year olds and plus in Willie, Mapimpi, Reinach, Koch and Mostert and he needs to dump Kleyn and v Staaden

Nov 25, 2024, 11:56

I'm not saying that we won't need to replace players. I'm saying that Rassie has had al the experimental time he needs. Far more than what other teams do.

By now, I'm sure he knows who all his replacements are.

Nov 25, 2024, 12:57

That’s why I’m hoping we see some on my list especially at centre where we have blooded no youngsters other than a hint for Moodie at 13

And bloody Rassie needs to wake up when it comes to locks - Moerat and Nortje are not by a long shot our best young locks - there is a long queue of better young locks

For me, we need to play our best side from here on out. Sure, we can rest players and yes players will need to be replaced. But we've had the time needed to spot the replacements for the current crop. Those guys can be part of the squad, be up to date with what is required etc, and then when there are injuries, replacements or simply resting of players, the replacements come in  and assume their roll.

EG...why do we need to try Nohamba and Papier? What happens if they have good games when we try them?

Because Williams and Hendrikse have had good games this year.

So what happens when we have 4 Bok 9s all performing well?

The same for wingers. Kolbe, Arendse are there for now and not looking to be replaced any times soon. So we need another winger for when Mapimpi goes, but do you really need to add four more wingers to the squad?

We are fine with locks, for now. But in three/four years we will need replacements.

I'm just questioning why we need this massive squad and this travelling circus...with a different team every single week. What is the point?

The ABs have had the most dominant team of the modern era. Smith was their 9...and TJ was the back-up. Sure they could have tried numerous other 9s and cruised around with a massive squad of players...but they didn't do that. They knew who their best player was and they picked him as often as possible. Same for almost every other position.

And when you have your best players playing together as much as possible, that's when you find that extra gear that won the ABs so many games and made them unbeatable.

Currently the Boks are struggling massively for cohesion and yes they are winning, but no game ever feels truly dominant and like they were in control throughout - against top tier opposition.

It feels to me like Rassie is experimenting for experimenting sake now and I really cant see the point in this much chopping and changing.

Dave

There are a few you actually left out - but I doubb not Erasmus will have tem on his list.

The real list should alsoc ontain there are players that we need not see again wearing he Spingbok jersey.

Top of that list is Esterhuizen and Mostert.

Nov 25, 2024, 13:46

Dave, I have been keeping an eye out for Jurenzo for the past 3-4 years, ever since his monster tackle went viral.

I have a lot of hope for him. What an incredible line breaker. ... and his tackleing is superb too!

I just hope that his passing / vision is as good as the rest of his game.

I'd like to see him dominate the 13 jersey for the Sharks for a season before he is selected for the Boks.

@Mike... speaking special English again?

Nov 25, 2024, 14:22

Plum I can’t see how you can say we are ok at lock when Eben, Lood and Mostert are 33, with RG 29

Where are the locks we are going to use at the next WC?

Same applies at centre where all 4 of our main centres are over 30

As for 9 we need at least three test ready 9’s and at the moment only Williams is a dead certainty. Hendrikse has potential but needs to be more assertive. We need to find one more 9

My point with Rassie is that he has got some of his contingency plans right but some he has fucked up - like still retaining the likes of Willie, Mapimpi, Reinach, Koch and Mostert - or thinking the likes of Moerat, Kleyn, Nortje, v Staaden or Nico Janse v Rensburg are the answers - we would have been far better served having the likes of Jurenzo Julius, David Kriel, Nohamba, Ruben v Heerden, Ruan Vermaak and the Tsituka brothers involved

I don’t mind us being a little unpolished in the name of building depth as long as we keep winning

We are playing Italy twice and Portugal at the start of next season, that’s the perfect time to blood all the right youngsters and then select your best side thereafter

Nov 25, 2024, 14:26

Chip what has impressed me the most about Jurenzo apart from the obvious, is his vision and hands. He seems to have a really good rugby brain on him

He reminds me of Am at his best in terms of vision and skills - but he is bigger and faster than Am

Of all the youngsters in SA he excites me the most - I’d even put him ahead of Sacha - that’s how good he is - he is special

Man of the Match Mostert  sorts the Bok lineout….indispensible.

Nov 25, 2024, 18:01

Agree on most, but Nohambe is very good at club level, but I feel that he lacks size and patience you need in tight test matches. He will get destroyed on the bigger stage. I could be wrong but he is super small and gets away with it because of the how the lions play. With an expansive game where there is space he is fine but I can see him playing in Christchurch in August with the rain pelting down on a muddy field where the forwards dominate the game and he has to be in the thick of it. Faf just about gets away with his size and punches well above his weight and so does Kolbe and Arendse, but Nohambe might be too small.

I think Hooker and Julius could be our future bok combo, both only 21.

Henco start has faded a bit, I've not seen him excel and he is an out and out 13. Where as Julius can cover 13 and wing. Hooker can cover 12, 13 and wing.

But with Esterhuizen and Am at the Saarks, I'm really curious to see how much game time they will get. Agree the two just mentioned is getting a bit on, but Dud at 33 is still producing the goods, so don't write off Am and Esterhuizen.

It might take four years to see the youngsters get more game time and I think Rassie backs experience and will drip feed these guys over the next four years to keep them in the system.

I would prefer a more youthful look as I believe the current crop will be too old for the next World Cup. Even Eben and PSDT and definitely not Kolis. Imagine having 10 players in your starting lineup over 35. You can get away with one old guy, but not so many players. The body won't recover that fast as a 26 year old with 50 caps.

Nov 25, 2024, 19:12

Mostert did fuck all other than run a great line - that was the best and only good thing I have ever seen him do - literally

He was bog ordinary for the rest of the game - Thomas, Grobelaar, Wilco, RG, Kolisi, Elrigh Louw and Wiese were all better than Mostert in that game and that’s a fact

Nov 25, 2024, 19:16

Absolutely nothing wrong with Nohamba’s patience etc etc - he is a phenomenal player - his issue is his size and defence which i suspect is the reason he has not had the invite past the alignment camp

I like Hooker but I need to see more of him. I know already that David Kriel is the business at 12 and I definitely want to see Willemse at 12 for all kinds of reasons including retaining the very impressive Fassi at 15

I want to see some deft touches from Hooker not just a big physical guy - time will tell
