In the grand finale of U16 Grant Khomo Week, the Sharks and Blue Bulls stamped their authority, finishing undefeated after their last matches at St Alban’s College in Pretoria. The Sharks unleashed their fury with a 51-28 win over Western Province, and the Bulls also showed no mercy, trampling the WP XV 43-12.
The Sharks' victory was a spectacle of tries with the team crossing the line seven times. Among the standout players, reserve loosehead prop Nyakallo Masiloane and winger Lisa Sijadu each bagged a brace of tries. Flyhalf Daniel Miskey, bouncing back from a shaky performance against the Bulls, nailed five conversions and two penalties.
"We knew we had to come out strong and keep the pressure on, and the team delivered beautifully,"
Miskey commented after the game.
The Bulls, not to be outdone, also racked up seven tries in their demolition of the WP XV. Caleb Pretorius and Hendre Ehlers, playing at No 8 and reserve hooker respectively, scored two tries each, showcasing the depth and talent in their squad.
In other matches, a surprise twist saw Free State pull off a remarkable 45-34 upset against the Griquas. Tighthead prop Rossouw van de Waal emerged as the hero of the hour, completing a hat-trick that left the Griquas reeling especially after their strong start to the tournament.
Zimbabwe continued their successful campaign with a 34-5 victory over Namibia, with fullback Ethan Zhou adding a double in the second half to solidify their win. Meanwhile, the Iqhawe XV provided one of the day's most exhilarating performances, routing Border Country Districts 43-11.
The contest between the Golden Lions and South Western Districts was a tighter affair with SWD edging out a 15-5 victory, thanks to a crucial second-half try from scrumhalf Rufagon Hendricks.
The tournament concluded with standout performances across the board, setting the stage for these young athletes to possibly shine on bigger stages in the future. The Grant Khomo Week once again proved to be a crucial platform for showcasing the raw, untapped talent brewing in the school rugby scene.
