Johan Ackermann, in his candid discussion on the Megafoon Rugby podcast, made it clear that the Vodacom Bulls are still finding their stride under his leadership. Despite having clawed their way into a URC playoff position and briefly stepping into the Investec Champions Cup playoffs, where they were narrowly defeated 25-21 by Glasgow Warriors, Ackermann insists the team's evolution is ongoing.

The Bulls, currently sitting eighth on the URC log after 14 rounds, have shown signs of improvement but Ackermann emphasized,

"We've improved, but we're not the finished product yet."

His comments reflect a team in transition, not yet comfortable with their performance levels and still adjusting to strategic shifts.

Under the previous stewardship of Jake White, the Bulls demonstrated formidable prowess, reaching three of the last four URC finals. Yet, Ackermann has identified deeper, systemic issues that he believes need rectification for sustainable success. The coach is keen on maintaining the team’s renowned physicality while enhancing their offensive play.

"We want to keep the Bulls DNA – a strong set-piece and physical dominance – but also improve our attacking game,"

Ackermann stated, underlining his commitment to a balanced approach that fosters a new belief system within the squad.

In his quest for transformation, Ackermann has not only tweaked tactics but also initiated a cultural overhaul aimed at addressing problems related to consistency and player mindset. He pointed out that success could breed complacency, emphasizing the importance of a values-driven approach to foster accountability and respect. "Success can sometimes lead to complacency or entitlement," he explained, "For me, it’s about creating a value system, accountability and respect for the jersey."

Despite the urgency of the current URC campaign, where every game is critical, Ackermann has called for patience, signaling that the fruits of these profound changes will take time to manifest fully. "Real change doesn’t happen overnight," he remarked, setting the stage for a focused but patient progression towards a refurbished Bull's identity.

As the URC heads into its critical phase, Ackermann’s Bulls are not just aiming for playoff participation but are laying down the groundwork for future triumphs, emphasizing that the real victory will be in the successful integration of his new vision for the team.
