As the Rugby Championship gears up, the All Blacks are seen by many as the prime challenger to the Springboks' throne. Despite South Africa's recent dominance, culminating in a historic title win last year, their twin victories over New Zealand in 2024 highlighted a fiercely competitive rivalry. With the stage set for another epic showdown, the focus intensifies on the All Blacks’ ability to counter South Africa's formidable set-piece strength.

Veteran Springboks lock Victor Matfield pointed out the unique challenge posed by the New Zealand squad, especially in the scrums and lineouts. "The All Blacks was the one team we didn’t really get the upper hand in the scrum," Matfield noted, underscoring the intense battles that unfolded in their previous encounters. This year, the critical matches will be held on New Zealand soil, including a pivotal game at Eden Park, raising the stakes for both teams.

Concerns loom over the All Blacks' lineup, particularly with the injury to key prop Tyrel Lomax. Former All Black Sir John Kirwan expressed his worries, saying,

"We’ve got Lomax injured, so that’s a bit more of a concern for me. The scrum and lineout against South Africa is going to be fundamental to us winning – I think Lomax is a bigger loss."

His comments reflect the importance of a strong front row in clashing with the Springboks' pack.

On the Springboks side, strategic selections could play a crucial role. Matfield highlighted the return of seasoned players like Lood de Jager and the inclusion of emerging talents such as Wilco Louw, who has impressed at the Bulls. "It will be interesting to see if Rassie is going there with the older guys or he gives the youngsters an opportunity to play in a big Test match against the All Blacks," he mused. With a mix of experience and youth, the Springboks aim to maintain their edge while adapting to the evolving dynamics of international rugby.

As the championship looms, the All Blacks and Springboks are set for another monumental clash, with both teams sharpening their strategies and honing their strengths. The outcome of their encounters could very well dictate the pulse of this year’s tournament, highlighting once again the fierce and thrilling nature of rugby at the highest level.
