As the All Blacks brace for a stormy clash against the Springboks at Eden Park, former All Blacks hooker James Parsons has dissected the South African team's vulnerabilities, suggesting New Zealand might find success by borrowing tactics from the Wallabies. With the Springboks riding a four-game winning streak against the Kiwis, the upcoming Rugby Championship game is anything but predictable.

During a discussion on Sky Sports’ Aotearoa Rugby Pod, Parsons pointed out the effectiveness of the Wallabies' game plan in their recent victory over the Springboks. "When the Wallabies won, what did they do? There’s going to be a lot of kicking, especially with the potential wet conditions. Picking players who can exploit the weaknesses South Africa showed against the Wallabies is crucial." Notably, the Wallabies utilized strategic kicks to break the Springboks' defense, including 50:22s and grubbers, suggesting a similar approach might work for the All Blacks.

"Through the hands is still in the rugby DNA of New Zealand."

Parsons emphasized the need for the All Blacks to maintain their inherent style of play while also adapting to the conditions and the opponent's strategies. Despite the temptation to play conservatively, the former Blues captain believes that the All Blacks should not stray too far from their dynamic, running rugby roots, which have thrilled fans worldwide.

The Springboks' approach under coach Rassie Erasmus has been noted for its conservatism, focusing on contestable kicks and solid defense. However, Parsons highlighted a potential area of exploitation. "The Springboks’ rush defense did get exposed a lot by the Wallabies just by giving those bridge passes," he noted, suggesting that the All Blacks could benefit from similar tactics.

While acknowledging the Springboks' formidable defensive statistics, Parsons pointed out a slight dip in effectiveness between their wins and losses. "When South Africa win, they tackle at 85%. When they lose, they tackle at 82%," indicating that even minor fluctuations in performance can be decisive at the Test match level.

The matchup promises to be a gripping contest, with both teams looking to impose their game plans effectively. As the All Blacks aim to extend their impressive unbeaten streak at Eden Park, the strategies employed on Saturday will be crucial in determining the outcome of this high-stakes encounter.
