As the dust settles on Scott Robertson's abrupt departure, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has officially kicked off the hunt for a new All Blacks head coach. This time, they've set a clear mandate: only those with prior international coaching experience need apply, a stipulation conspicuously absent from Robertson’s resume when he assumed control post-2023 World Cup.

The quest for a new leader comes after Robertson, despite his domestic success with the Crusaders, was dismissed following a less-than-stellar 2025 season, culminating in a comprehensive review. The selection panel, featuring NZR chairman David Kirk, former All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu, and other notable names from New Zealand’s rugby echelons, are tasked with a decision that could shape the future of the iconic black jersey.

David Kirk emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating,

"This appointment is more than a job; it's about ensuring the All Blacks' legacy of excellence continues."

Applicants must not only have international coaching on their CV but also hold New Zealand citizenship, narrowing the field to a select group of seasoned tacticians.

Among the frontrunners are Jamie Joseph, known for his transformative work with Japan, and Dave Rennie, who has made his mark with both the Chiefs and the Wallabies. Vern Cotter, with his experiences with Scotland and Fiji, is also a strong contender. Meanwhile, current Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has withdrawn his name from consideration, simplifying the race somewhat.

Steve Lancaster, acting NZR chief executive, reinforced the urgency and meticulousness of the selection process.

"We are committed to a thorough and swift process to equip the All Blacks with the leadership needed to succeed on the world stage,"

he explained.

With the rugby world watching, NZR's decision will undoubtedly be pivotal as they aim to usher in a new era for New Zealand’s most storied sports team, ensuring that the legacy of the All Blacks is not only preserved but also enhanced in the years to come.
