In a surprising twist in international rugby, the iconic styles of the All Blacks and Springboks appear to have swapped, with New Zealand adopting a more traditional South African approach, while the Springboks have unleashed an expansive, dynamic style reminiscent of classic All Black rugby.

Last weekend, the Springboks, under the guidance of Rassie Erasmus, dazzled with a fast-paced game against the Wallabies, racing to a 22-0 lead that had rugby purists reminiscing about the All Blacks of yore. However, despite the initial brilliance, the Springboks couldn't maintain their momentum, ultimately succumbing to a stunning comeback by the Wallabies in Johannesburg.

Conversely, the All Blacks, now led by Scott Robertson, have doubled down on forward power and set-piece superiority. Their recent match in Cordoba saw them overpower Argentina with a dominant forward pack that controlled the game from start to finish, securing a 41-24 victory. Schalk Burger, a stalwart of South African rugby, noted the shift on The Verdict podcast:

"The first half, they were utterly dominant."

However, he did not hold back in criticizing the faltering Argentinians, pointing out their inability to compete in the set-piece and their high error count.

Hanyani Shimange, another former Springbok, echoed Burger’s observations, highlighting the strategic pivot under Robertson:

"The All Blacks in the forwards, they’ve got a [big] scrum, score maul tries, it’s almost a change as they’re picking a heavier pack now."

Jean de Villiers, the ex-Springbok captain, encapsulated the role reversal with a witty remark, "The All Blacks are playing like the Springboks and the Springboks are playing like the All Blacks," highlighting a fascinating phase in international rugby where traditional playbooks are being rewritten.

This stylistic metamorphosis adds an intriguing layer to the rivalry between these two rugby powerhouses, promising thrilling encounters and perhaps a new era where the lines between the All Black and Springbok rugby styles blur into a new form of dynamic, unpredictable play.
