Just when you thought the All Blacks' locker was bolted shut and ready for the northern tour, they've had to shuffle the deck. Patrick Tuipulotu, the towering lock and inadvertent frequent flyer of the injury list, is set to miss the upcoming tour due to a shoulder injury that demands surgery and a six-month recovery period. It's a significant blow not just for the All Blacks but also for the Blues, who will now be sans their skipper as the new Super Rugby Pacific season kicks off.

The 32-year-old's shoulder woes aren't new; they've been a nagging companion throughout the Rugby Championship, steadily getting worse. Now, they've culminated in a forced sabbatical from the game. This isn’t Tuipulotu’s first rodeo with injuries, having previously nursed a facial fracture earlier this year during a stint in Argentina. It seems his body is as committed to the drama as the sport itself.

"It's another tough break for Patrick, who has battled through numerous injuries throughout his admirable career. We wish him a speedy recovery,"

In light of Tuipulotu's withdrawal, the All Blacks have called up Sam Darry, a young gun who debuted last year and has been flexing his rugby muscles with Canterbury during the NPC season. Darry’s promotion is bittersweet, as it pulls him out of the NPC final, should Canterbury make it that far.

With Tupou Vaa’i also out for the season, the squad's second-row options are running thin, leaving a hefty load on the shoulders of captain Scott Barrett. Barrett, with 86 caps, is now the old hand among newer faces like Fabian Holland (nine caps), Josh Lord (eight), and Darry.

As for the All Blacks XV, they're rejigging their locker room too. Naitoa Ah Kuoi, Josh Beehre, and Isaia Walker-Leawere will beef up the lock positions, stepping in for the promoted Darry. It’s musical chairs, but with hefty rugby players instead of preschoolers.

The reshuffling of players and the rush to fill gaps highlight the relentless nature of rugby—where the game doesn’t stop for injuries, and neither does the drama. As the All Blacks gear up for their northern escapade, they’ll be hoping that their rejigged squad can lock down some victories, even without their key enforcers.
