AE definitely is a great power runner and defender….just a pity that it took so long for Bok coaches to see his worth….very stupid….He offers more @ 12 than just power.
Persronally I do not rate Esterhuizen particcularly high as a center - a good provincial player an even on tests but not against Top international teams. Maybe it is prejudice - but the first time I saw him plaqying for the Under 20 Springboks - he was ceter in the final of the RWC Under 20, Easterhuizen knocked n a god pass to him withan opn tryline ahead of him and as a resu lt f that the SA under 20's lost the match b y 2 points. On at least one occasion where he did play in a test the same thing happened.for the Springboks the same thing ahppened.
Howver Es terhuizen is not when tackled thaqt the ball comes bac at breakdown whee he does not go into the mauls to ensure the balls are protected against take-overs.
There is anothe issue which may coun against him and that is defense. I will give you on xanle. - Each of Esterhuizn and De Allende was involved in 5 tests. In his five tests - De A llende made 42 tackles and missed 5 tackles. in his 5 tests Eserhuizen made 22 tackles and missed 5.
I do not think he is aprticulary highly rated by E#rasmus ad eoher coaches.who select the squads and teams. In the 2019 WC Willemse was called up to replace Kriel as center. Fact is that Willemse I think at the time was only 20 yesrs of age - but he was also the Player of the Year in the Un der 20WC that year. He had lots of promise but have played only a few games pla ying fo the Sormers and was very inexperieced. The fact that he was called up to teh Sringb ok squad says a lot about the coache\s opinion of Esterhuizen as a player. He is coming back tto SA to play for the Sharks and then more people wiill see him play. Willemse and Jantjies - the scrummie.
Talking about Willeme - the Rupert family has a program whereby promising sports kids are enrolled at Paul Roos Gym and they are also provided proper housing facilites and supvisory staff to look afte complaiane with their diets and disicipline compliance are also provided. There have been at least 2 Springboks that came though that program - Willms and Jtjie he scrummie. Rupert and Montsepe own 74,5% share in he Northern Bulls Franchise team and they hav appointed as Manage of their Rugby interests. . .

That step and pass behind the back on Saturday...it does sway me a little to wanting to see him at 12 for the Boks.
Imagine having a Bok 12 that can do that. Compared to the donkey we've had there for the better part of the last decade.

If we played Willemse at 12, our game plan would have to change and that is exciting as we would all rather see a 12 attacking space than taking it up.
But the reality of test rugby dictates that taking it up at 12 is the model evidenced by all of the test 12’s being physical brutes bar Barrett but he is after all over 100kg so hardly small - look at the size of de Allende, Esterhuizen, Aki, Tuilagi, Ollie Lawrence, Kerevi, Danty , Tuipolotu etc
Willemse at 12 changing the precedent is a mouth watering prospect but current history dictates it won’t work but I’d like to see us give it a go

Well I think DDA will still be there for a while as he is the incumbent….Esterhuisen will be there to….then you have Rikus Pretorius who is my first choice besides AE…Dan Du plessis, Marius louw and Harold Vorster are playing well enough to be considered…I have always liked Harold as he is one tough son of bitch….Willemse should stay at 15 and Kolbe, Am and Arendse are certain picks if fit … so we do have good guys that are specialist 12,s that can slot in.

Willemse is doing very well at 15 plus he is a better defender than Fassi….he doesn’t play 12 for the Stormers, only when there is a injury crisis….so why pick him at 12 when we have other options? Not saying that he is not talented enough, but he is settled in the 15 spot …besides that, Fassi is not even in the 43 man squad.
Because it’s about making the most of the young talent we have at our disposal.
No Willemse is not playing 12 for the Stormers in an emergency he has played most his games there shifting Dan from 12 to 13, with the impressive Gelant operating at 15. Willemse is equally good at 12 or 15.
Fassi’s defence this year has been spot just ask Roos - Fassi has been in unbelievable form for the Sharks at 15 and is one hell of a talent.
Given these facts, if we want the best younger players on the field then it has to be Arendse on the wing, Fassi at 15, Moodie at 13 and Willemse at 12 with David Kriel on the bench

Thanks Plum…AE will be 33 come WC 27 and his form is excellent….he must just keep it up. Rassie always like to sprinkle in some older guys like with Deon and Thor last WC….but we have talent galore and in each position almost. So exciting times ahead : )
Sacha is not a test 12’s backside, he is far too small for a test 12, maybe once he fills out and bulks up. Till then he can only really be considered at 10.
