In a surprising turn of events, All Blacks standout Ardie Savea has clarified his decision to leave the national team, a move that sparked widespread speculation and misinterpretations. Contrary to rumors, his decision was not driven by discontent with then-head coach Scott Robertson but rather by personal and familial considerations.

Savea communicated to New Zealand Rugby (NZR) chair David Kirk during the Grand Slam tour last November that he wished to exit his contract prematurely, citing the strain of prolonged periods away from his family. "Savea was explicit – he was struggling with what was effectively a nomadic lifestyle of being away from his home and family for long spells," reported Gregor Paul. The back rower expressed that the relentless travel and game schedule had left him physically and mentally depleted, missing precious moments with his wife Saskia and their three children.

While it was initially reported that Savea's departure might have been linked to a player revolt against Robertson, further investigation revealed no evidence supporting such claims. In fact, Savea had informed both Kirk and Robertson of his feelings and intentions, maintaining professional decorum throughout the discussions.

"But two things can both be true at the same time,"

Paul noted, acknowledging that while Savea did face challenges within the team environment, these did not directly influence his decision to step back.

Amidst this personal crisis, the narrative that Savea had presented an ultimatum concerning Robertson's leadership emerged, portraying him as a figure of player entitlement—a portrayal he 'vehemently refutes'. The situation was further complicated by Savea's contract with Moana Pasifika, which lacked the rest and rotation agreements he previously had, leading to tensions during negotiations. However, it is essential to note that sources close to the team described the relationship between Savea and Robertson as professional, albeit lacking the closeness Savea had with former coach Ian Foster.

In response to his situation, NZR and Savea's representatives began crafting a workload management plan to help him peak for the 2027 World Cup. This strategic approach included potentially skipping the July internationals to ensure his readiness for the Greatest Rivalry Series in South Africa.

The resolution to Savea's predicament came through the intervention of former All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu, who was tasked by Kirk to persuade Savea to remain in New Zealand. Their efforts proved fruitful, highlighting the communal spirit and support systems within NZR aimed at valuing and preserving their players' well-being and career longevity.
