Ardie Savea, a titan of rugby and the 2023 World Rugby Player of the Year, has openly discussed the personal battles and near career-ending thoughts that shadowed his journey. Despite a stellar debut in 2016, Savea faced a period where the glamour of early fame nearly pushed him out of New Zealand and the sport he mastered.

Initially celebrated as the next big thing, Savea's role dwindled to that of a bench player by 2017, a shift that weighed heavily on him.

"Being young, you kind of believe that stuff and let it get to you. I didn’t show it on the outside but, yeah..."

Savea confessed during an interview with American YouTuber Donald De La Haye. The lack of playtime led him to a personal crisis, where quitting seemed the only option.

"In the off-season, I told my wife I wanted to leave New Zealand, and I almost got to the point where I wanted to quit rugby because I wasn’t enjoying it anymore."

However, a pivotal conversation with his wife reshaped his mindset, urging him to rediscover his love for the game irrespective of external pressures. Fueled by this renewed passion, Savea not only reclaimed his spot but became a key player for the All Blacks, solidifying his position by the end of 2018.

Now in his 30s, Savea remains a crucial part of the team, having extended his contract with New Zealand Rugby until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, potentially marking his final appearance in the global arena. Despite acknowledging the emergence of younger, faster players, Savea's experience and mental strength keep him competitive. He describes his psychological approach as striving for a "purple state" — a balance between fiery aggression and cool-headed pressure management.

As the All Blacks face an injury crisis with nine players down, Savea's resilience and leadership will be vital in their upcoming Rugby Championship campaign. His journey from doubt to dominance serves as a testament to the mental battles athletes often face behind their physical exploits.
