In a nail-biter finish at the New York Sevens, the Australian squad narrowly defeated the Blitzboks, punching their ticket to the semi-finals against Fiji. Despite a heroic double from Selvyn Davids, marking his 100th and 101st SVNS series tries, it wasn’t enough to overcome Australia’s last-minute surge, ending in a 19-12 defeat for South Africa.

The match was a rollercoaster from the get-go. Early dominance in territory by the Blitzboks was quickly overshadowed by Australia’s James Turner, who sliced through the defense to score the first try. The situation worsened for South Africa as Ryan Oosthuizen received a yellow card for a neck roll, leaving the team a man short. Australia capitalized on this with Ben Dalton pushing over the line shortly after, broadening the gap to 12-0.

However, the Blitzboks showed their resilience. Davids’ landmark try just before the half brought some hope, cutting the deficit to 12-7. Post-halftime, Davids was quick to add another, leveling the scores, but his missed conversion kept the game on a knife-edge. Turner’s subsequent try restored Australia’s lead, setting the stage for a tense finish.

With the clock winding down, Jayden Blake became Australia’s hero, crossing the line with just 30 seconds left, sealing the victory for his team. "It was a tough match, but we kept our composure and took our chances," Blake commented on the win.

"Every point counts in these games, and we fought hard for this win," said Blake, reflecting the high stakes.

Looking ahead, Australia will face a formidable Fiji team in the first semi-final, while the Blitzboks are set to challenge Argentina. Both South Africa and Fiji are neck-and-neck in the season standings, each with 86 points, turning up the heat as the regular season title hangs in the balance.

The Blitzboks had previously showcased their strength earlier in the day with convincing wins over New Zealand and France. Yet, the loss to Australia in their final pool match sets up a crucial clash with Argentina, where only a win will keep their title hopes alive.

Teams into the semi-finals: Australia, Fiji, South Africa, Argentina.
