The All Blacks landscape has finally steadied with the recent appointment of Dave Rennie as head coach, a move that has injected a fresh dose of optimism into New Zealand's rugby scene. Following a tumultuous period marked by the dismissal of Scott Robertson in January, Rennie’s selection brings a calming presence to the helm. Beauden Barrett, a key figure in New Zealand rugby, was involved in the comprehensive review process that led to this pivotal decision.

Rennie, who is finishing up his tenure with Japan's Kobelco Kobe Steelers, won't start his role with the All Blacks until June. However, he has already made clear his commitment to impartiality in player selection, a stance that resonates well with the players. Barrett, who has had his fair share of coaches over his illustrious career, spoke highly of Rennie, noting the respect he commands from players who have been under his guidance.

"There has obviously been really good praise for Dave Rennie with the track record he has. I’ve spoken to a number of Chiefs players, and they hold him in very high regard,"

Barrett said.

Barrett’s own experience with Rennie’s teams added to his endorsement of the new coach. Reflecting on his early years facing Rennie's formidable Chiefs squads, Barrett’s respect for Rennie is palpable. With the Rugby World Cup looming, the appointment seems timely. Barrett, currently playing for the Blues in Super Rugby Pacific, also commented on the rigorous selection process he hopes will be a hallmark of Rennie's tenure:

"With Dave not coaching in New Zealand, it’s probably even more so. ‘We should be earning our right to be an All Black,’"

he emphasized.

Meanwhile, Barrett's younger brother, Scott Barrett, is on a sabbatical but is expected to return to the Crusaders later in the season. His role and position will undoubtedly come under scrutiny as Rennie takes charge.

The All Blacks are set to face a challenging series against France, Italy, and Ireland in July, which will be the first test of Rennie's leadership. With a clear strategy and a focus on merit-based selection, Rennie’s tenure is poised to usher in a new era for New Zealand rugby, one that hopefully aligns with the high standards and expectations characteristic of the All Blacks.
