As the All Blacks gear up for their momentous tour to South Africa later this year, Beauden Barrett shares his excitement and anticipation for what promises to be a thrilling series of matches against the formidable Springboks. The tour, set to commence in early August, will see New Zealand face all four United Rugby Championship sides before engaging in three high-stakes encounters with the Springboks in Johannesburg and Cape Town, concluding with a final Test in Baltimore on September 12.

With both teams boasting impressive records in Test rugby history, the All Blacks and Springboks have been locked in a fierce rivalry since their first series in 1921. New Zealand holds a winning record of 76%, while South Africa, with a 64% success rate, has clinched the most Rugby World Cup titles with four victories. This historic backdrop sets the stage for what Barrett aptly describes as the "Greatest Rivalry" series.

"It’s such a unique tour experience where you can relate them to like a Lions tour,"

Barrett explained on the DSPN podcast with Martin Devlin. He anticipates the tour to be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor, akin to the storied Lions tours, highlighting the intensity and competitive spirit that characterize matches against South African teams.

The Springboks' recent dominance on the international stage is notable, with consecutive World Cup wins in 2019 and 2023, a series victory over the British & Irish Lions in 2021, and back-to-back Rugby Championship titles in the last two years. This formidable track record, Barrett notes, is a testament to the depth and quality of South African rugby.

"And then there’s the Springboks. Obviously, they’re the other world champions. Talk about depth. They’ve got guys just coming out of their system left, right and centre."

Barrett's respect for the Springboks' capabilities is palpable as he acknowledges the rigorous test that awaits the All Blacks. With the World Cup on the horizon next year, the upcoming series not only provides an opportunity to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of both teams but also sets the stage for what could be pivotal encounters in the global tournament.

The anticipation of competing in such a challenging environment is a driving force for Barrett, who relishes the opportunity to test his mettle against some of the best players in the world. As the tour approaches, the excitement builds not just for the players but for fans around the globe, eager to witness another chapter in this storied rivalry unfold.
