Leicester fly-half Billy Searle has been in stellar form this season, catching the eyes of the England selectors. After a successful stint in France and overcoming the abrupt closure of Worcester, Searle's career trajectory has been upward, highlighted by his performance for England A against Ireland XV and his crucial role in Leicester's push for the Premiership title. With the Nations Championship on the horizon, Searle's inclusion in the England squad seems increasingly likely.

Searle's recent performances have not gone unnoticed by England coach Steve Borthwick, particularly given the team's need to bounce back from a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Six Nations. "I have had a few chats," Searle shared, reflecting on his interactions with Borthwick and other coaching staff. The discussions have been promising, with Borthwick commending Searle's season contributions during a training visit. "He came in one day in the training week and we had a brief chat, just saying well done for the season and going really well," Searle recounted.

"I know I am sort of there, I’m on the radar and it’s just about trying to perform well here and finish the season on a real high with Leicester and then put myself in the best position to hopefully potentially get a call up."

The strategic challenges posed by the upcoming international fixtures, which include matches in South Africa, Argentina, and an 'away' game against Fiji in Liverpool, might open further doors for Searle. Borthwick is considering using an extended squad to manage player fatigue, providing Searle a prime opportunity to step into the Test arena.

Despite the pressures, Searle remains focused on his immediate responsibilities at Leicester, where his style of play has found a perfect fit. "We are looking to move the ball, and it suits my game down to a tee," he explained. His ability to blend game management with his innate attacking instincts has been a boon for Leicester, particularly evident in their recent 62-3 thrashing of Newcastle, where Searle's strategy helped the wingers score seven out of ten tries.

The evolution of rugby into a more attack-oriented game excites Searle, especially after recent rule changes enhancing competition for box kicks, which favor an unstructured attacking style that he thrives in. "The big change was when they sorted that escort rule," Searle noted, emphasizing the dynamic nature of modern rugby and Leicester's adaptation to these changes.

Reflecting on his tumultuous journey through the ranks of professional rugby, Searle's resilience shines through. From his early days at Launceston and Plymouth to his more recent challenges, including the unexpected shutdown of Worcester and a temporary stint at Bath, Searle has navigated his career with determination and strategic patience, choosing not to "devalue" himself by rushing into unsuitable contracts. Instead, he waited for the right opportunity, which eventually came from Leicester, proving that sometimes, patience and perseverance do indeed pay off.

As the season progresses towards the climactic playoffs, Searle's focus remains unwavering: to continue enhancing his game and to hopefully don the England jersey once more, contributing to the national team's resurgence on the international stage.
