Leicester Tigers' fly-half Billy Searle has placed himself firmly in contention for an England call-up following a standout performance in the English Premiership. At the age of 30, Searle's recent form, highlighted by clinching the Gallagher Player of the Month for January 2026, has been nothing short of remarkable. His ascent comes after a spellbinding tenure in France, which, according to Searle, significantly honed his skills and strategic understanding of the game.

Despite the presence of Australian rugby stalwart James O'Connor at Leicester, Searle has successfully claimed the number 10 jersey. "I guess on paper, you probably have him down as number one, if you’re being honest," Searle acknowledged in a candid discussion on The Rugby Pod with Jim Hamilton and Andy Goode. Yet, the opportunity to compete was always part of the deal when he joined Leicester. "The conversation was, ‘we’re going to bring someone in, you can compete with and have a real crack at’. And I was confident in my own game," he explained.

"I feel like I’ve always had the game, but it’s putting it together and understanding how to do that as a fly-half and lead the team around."

The competition with O'Connor has not only pushed Searle to refine his skills but also fostered a mutually respectful rivalry. "He’s obviously a quality player and a great bloke. I’ve got a lot of time for him. And then just kicked on when I got the opportunity, and played well. I know I’ve got to keep doing that, because you’ve got him waiting in the wings to come in, and he’s a quality player, and quality guy to compete with every day, and it’s probably only making me better," Searle added.

His performances have not gone unnoticed by England's coaching staff either. After a compelling display for England A against Ireland A, where he scored a try and kicked five goals, conversations with national coaches have been promising. "I have had conversations with Lee Blackett," Searle shared. "I was in last week. We had a good chat and just saying how well I’m doing, like, just some stuff about my game, but saying that I’m in the and they’re talking about me, which is great to hear."

Searle's journey from the French leagues back to the Premiership was driven by more than just professional growth; it was also about seizing the chance to represent England. "Yeah, I think so, if I’m honest," he admitted when asked if playing for England was a motivating factor. "It was in the back of my mind when I came back and looked at the ten situation in England."

As Searle continues to shine on the field, his story is a testament to resilience and the relentless pursuit of excellence. For now, he remains focused on his performance, aware that his dream of donning the England jersey could soon become a reality, propelled not just by his talent, but by his profound understanding of the game and leadership on the field.
