Looks like the Blitzboks are in for a rollercoaster ride at the Cape Town Sevens this weekend! Fresh off a lukewarm fifth-place finish in Dubai, the South African squad now finds themselves staring down the barrel of a loaded Pool A, featuring no less than the Dubai champions, New Zealand, alongside Fiji and Great Britain. Talk about being thrown into the deep end!
With their pool matches lined up like dominos ready to topple – Fiji at 12:44pm, New Zealand at 4pm, and a showdown with Great Britain at 7:41pm to cap off the day – the Blitzboks’ journey to redemption in Cape Town is no Sunday park stroll. And as if the tough draw wasn’t enough, there’s a cloud of uncertainty hanging over key players Selvyn Davids and Ryan Oosthuizen, both of whom are racing against time to recover from injuries sustained in Dubai.
"Every game is like a mini-final in this pool,"
The Cape Town Stadium will buzz with activity from 10am, starting with the women's clash between Japan and Canada, and wrapping up just before the clock strikes 8pm. After an action-packed Saturday featuring a total of 24 games, only the top two teams from each pool will have a shot at glory in Sunday’s semi-finals. The rest? They’ll have to settle for battling over the crumbs of minor placings.
The finals on Sunday promise to be a spectacle, with the women's final at 4:10pm followed closely by the men's at 4:43pm. Will the Blitzboks make it through their "group of death" to claim a spot in the final? That remains to be seen.
Cape Town Sevens pools shape up as follows:
Men’s Pool A: South Africa, New Zealand, Fiji, Great Britain Men’s Pool B: Australia, Argentina, France, Spain
Women’s Pool A: New Zealand, Fiji, Great Britain, USA Women’s Pool B: Australia, Canada, France, Japan
As the clock ticks down to the weekend, all eyes will be on the Blitzboks to see if they can turn the tides in their favor amidst the challenges. Let the games begin!
