Shilton van Wyk, the lightning-fast standout for the Blitzboks, is set to ignite the turf as the team gears up for a blazing start in Dubai. Marking nearly four years since his sensational debut at The Sevens Stadium, where he notched a try in each of his first three games, Van Wyk has since become a pivotal force in propelling the Blitzboks to repeated victories at this venue. With an impressive 80% win rate in Dubai under his belt and fresh off a world championship win in 2025, Van Wyk is eyeing another dominant start to the season.
“We need a fast start, that is for sure,” Van Wyk stated, emphasizing the importance of setting the tone early against France this Saturday. “And after that, we need to maintain that momentum. We need to dominate from the outset and start the season on a high note.” Memories of his debut still flicker brightly for Van Wyk, who cherishes the significant milestones of his early days with the team.
“I remember those two tournaments in 2021 and how massive it was for me and my family,”
he recounted. “To become a Blitzbok was very significant and to be a successful one even more so. But that is in the past and to give justice to those memories, we need to be spot-on here this weekend. We trained well in our pre-season and arrived ready, so we are good to go.”
The Blitzboks’ squad is further strengthened this season by the return of Renfred Dazel as assistant coach. Dazel, a former player with a rich history at Dubai, highlighted the team’s illustrious track record and his enthusiasm for rejoining the coaching staff.
“We had some excellent results here indeed and not all of them on the A-field in finals,” said Dazel. “There was also an ‘A’-side that came here every year, and they learned valuable lessons, playing on the outside pitches in the International Invitational tournament. Some big names started out on those pitches in the past. It is great to be part of the Blitzboks set-up, this team have set high standards and our job this year will be to make sure we stick to that.”
This weekend, watch the Blitzboks in action in Dubai, where they’ll strive to replicate their past successes and kick off the season with a bang. The team is buzzing, the coaches are prepped, and Shilton van Wyk is as speedy as ever. Don't blink, or you'll miss them tearing up the pitch!
