In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Cameron Suafoa, a standout forward for the Blues, has hung up his boots at the tender age of 27 following a devastating terminal cancer diagnosis. This marks a premature end to what could have been a storied rugby career.

Suafoa's battle with cancer began back in November 2023 when doctors first discovered a tumor on his back. After undergoing surgery to remove the tumor, he faced six weeks of grueling radiation therapy. Demonstrating immense resilience, Suafoa made a brief comeback in 2024, hitting the field with North Harbour in provincial rugby, before making his way back to the Blues in the Super Rugby circuit the following year.

However, the close of the 2025 season brought with it grim news. Suafoa was diagnosed with cancer once again, and this time it was terminal. Facing this dire prognosis, he made the difficult decision to retire from the sport he loves.

"I’ve decided to finish playing rugby officially, decided to retire, the unfortunate news that my cancer had spread and it was terminal now,"

Suafoa shared in a poignant video released by his team. He also revealed his upcoming plans to battle the disease with chemotherapy, entering into what he describes as a "different type of battle."

During his too-short career, Suafoa, who played both as a lock and a flanker, also had the honor of representing the New Zealand Maori in 2022, showcasing his skills on an international stage. His departure from rugby is not just a loss for the Blues but for the sport as a whole.

As Suafoa steps away from the rugby pitch to focus on his health, the rugby community stands in solidarity with him, supporting him through the challenges ahead. His courage, both on and off the field, will undoubtedly continue to inspire many.
