In the swirling vortex of rumors surrounding Springbok hooker Joseph Dweba's adaptation to life in the PREM, Exeter Chiefs’ Rob Baxter stands as a beacon of support. Despite the growing buzz of Dweba’s difficulties in settling down in England, Baxter blasts through the gossip with a robust endorsement of his player. Since his move from the Stormers, Dweba has bagged five tries in 15 matches, yet his recent absence from the field has sparked speculations.

Dweba's non-appearance, especially post the Premiership Cup final loss to Leicester Tigers and being sidelined against Sale Sharks, has ignited talks about his comfort levels in his new environment. However, Baxter offers a straightforward explanation and an optimistic outlook.

"I think he misses his family without a doubt. But the plan is that they’ll be over here shortly now. I think they’re coming over this summer. So, there’s absolutely no reason for him not to be settled in more than he is now,"

Baxter clarified in a discussion with RugbyPass.

Baxter didn’t shy away from acknowledging the personal challenges Dweba has faced but was quick to praise his professional demeanor. "It’s clearly not easy. We gave him some additional time, obviously, to make it worth travelling back to South Africa, spending time with his family. He got held up, not being able to fly back through the Middle East, because of all the bits and pieces that happened. But, you know, those issues will happen every now and again, but I think Joseph’s handled it really well," Baxter noted.

The director of rugby at Exeter Chiefs is confident not only in Dweba’s ability to overcome these hurdles but also in his crucial role in the team.

"He’s been very professional about things and how he has to get on with stuff. So, no, he’s dealing with it as best he can. I can only see things improving in that realm, not getting worse,"

he added. Baxter also hinted at a swift return for Dweba to the main squad, fueled by recent intensive training sessions aimed at regaining his top form. "But he’s back on it now, he’s working hard, doing lots of extras. He’s going to get sharp again, and he’ll be back in the side relatively quickly," Baxter asserted.

With the Nations Championship just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better for Dweba to rediscover his rhythm and prove pivotal in Exeter’s ongoing campaign.
