In a stunning display of rugby prowess, Bordeaux Bègles tore apart the reigning champions Toulouse in a Top 14 showdown, signaling a clear threat to their league rivals. The absence of Toulouse's linchpin, Antoine Dupont, following his exploits in France’s Six Nations victory, left a void that Bordeaux exploited mercilessly. Propelled by the dynamic duo of Maxime Lucu and Matthieu Jalibert, Bordeaux's 44-20 triumph not only propelled them to fourth place in the standings but also edged them tantalizingly close to an automatic semi-final berth, just two points behind second-placed Montpellier.

The much-anticipated clash turned into a showcase of strategic mastery from Bordeaux, particularly from halfbacks Lucu and Jalibert. Lucu was in spectacular form, contributing a hefty 17 points. The match reached a fever pitch as Jalibert squared off against Toulouse’s Romain Ntamack, who was back from injury. Despite Ntamack’s strong start, which included a try among his 13 points giving Toulouse an early lead, Bordeaux had other plans.

"Like every time we play Toulouse, they are open affairs. By turning the screw little by little we found opportunities. We claimed five points so it’s good for the rest of the season,"

Jalibert remarked post-match on Canal+.

The tide turned dramatically after the break. Ntamack’s potential second try was disallowed following a TMO decision, allowing Bordeaux to seize control. Key plays by Damian Penaud and Lucu, following a critical interception by Jalibert, dismantled Toulouse’s defenses. By the 60-minute mark, Bordeaux had widened the gap to 30-13, effectively sealing the game.

The final stages saw further tries from Bordeaux substitutes Arthur Retiere and Xan Mousques, which polished the final score. Toulouse managed a late consolation try through Kalvin Gourgues, but it was too little, too late. Despite this setback, their first since January, Toulouse remains at the summit of the league, holding a 10-point lead, with a critical match against Montpellier looming, where Dupont is expected to make his return.

In other Top 14 action, Montpellier narrowly defeated Clermont 20-17 to climb into second place, while Stade Français handed a hefty 46-27 defeat to Toulon under the returned guidance of coach Pierre Mignoni. Additionally, La Rochelle solidified their league standing with a 20-6 victory over Pau, effectively denying Pau any advancement in the league table.
