England head coach Steve Borthwick has recently discussed the status of Owen Farrell, emphasizing the former national captain’s current focus on club commitments with Saracens. Despite his eligibility and previous international prowess, Farrell was notably absent from the 36-member England squad selected for the Autumn Nations Series.

Following a stint with French club Racing 92 and a brief sabbatical from international rugby, Farrell has chosen to concentrate on domestic play, although he briefly reappeared on the international scene earlier this year with the British & Irish Lions. His last appearance for England was during the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in securing a third-place finish against Argentina.

“Owen has gone out quite publicly and said a number of times that for right now, it’s just to get back to playing rugby back in England, enjoying his rugby after a difficult year injury wise last season,” explained Borthwick in a discussion with Sky Sports.

"We’re only a handful of games into this season, so I don’t think that’s a discussion for right now,"

Borthwick’s strategy appears to be one of cautious observation, keeping tabs on all eligible English players, signaling that Farrell’s international rugby chapter might not be completely over. “The door is never closed,” Borthwick remarked, reflecting a broader philosophy of inclusivity and evaluation.

The omission of Farrell has undoubtedly stirred discussions about the future direction of England’s team composition, especially in light of his extensive experience and past contributions. However, Borthwick remains optimistic about the depth and talent currently available within the squad.

"I’m delighted with the players that are here and the exciting depth of talent we have. There’s a lot of very good players in the squad right now, players that I am enjoying working with,"

As England gears up to face formidable opponents such as Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and Argentina in the upcoming series, the blend of seasoned players and fresh talent will be crucial for their campaign. The exclusion of a veteran like Farrell certainly poses challenges, but also opportunities for new leaders to emerge within the team.
