Imagine having the chance to rub shoulders with a legend. That’s the daily grind for the young guns at Western Province as Deon Fourie, aka Brannas, returns from injury to sprinkle his veteran magic over the team. Labeeb Levy, the mastermind coach of WP, couldn't be more thrilled to have his seasoned warrior back, especially with the squad currently staring up from the bottom of the Currie Cup standings after a string of losses.

Fourie, who’s just shy of his 100th cap for Province, isn’t just in the mix to boost numbers. He’s here to instill wisdom, resilience, and a bit of old-school grit. Levy gushed about Fourie's influence, saying,

"Brannas has been good for the group. We can use him as an example of someone who has played at the pinnacle and captained Western Province [to Currie Cup victory in 2012]."

Not to mention, the man’s a World Cup winner and was pivotal in the URC win in the 2021-22 season.

It’s clear that Fourie’s more than just a player; he’s a mentor brewed in the crucible of top-tier rugby. Levy added,

"He’s come up with some of his own ideas for the game. We want the group to tap into that experience, composure and dealing with pressure. You can’t buy that."

It’s this priceless experience that the rookies, like 18-year-olds Riley Norton and Oliver Reid, are soaking up. To train alongside a legend like Fourie is something they might have only dreamed of, and according to Levy, they’re making the most of this golden opportunity.

Levy is clear though, it’s not all about one man’s journey to the top or back from injury.

"It is still a team game, and it won’t be him alone getting that [Currie Cup] win. It will require a team effort,"

he emphasized. As much as Fourie brings to the table, rugby, after all, is won by teams, not individuals.

As they head into the clash with the Pumas, it’s a blend of seasoned might and youthful zest that Levy hopes will turn the tide for WP. And with Fourie on their side, the atmosphere is ripe for a resurgence. Who wouldn’t pay to watch that unfold or better yet, be a part of it?

TEAM: WP faces the Pumas with Nel leading the charge, alongside the hopefuls and the heralded return of Brannas. This mix of experience and youthful exuberance is what everyone’s watching this season.
