In the crucible of the Investec Champions Cup, moments arise that distill the game into pure, unadulterated battle. Such was the scene at Stade Mayol, where RC Toulon, led by their Italian vice-captain Juan Ignacio Brex, clung to a slender victory over the Stormers, the scoreboard reading 28-27. Amid a backdrop of fervent support and sweltering conditions, Brex stood central to a defensive effort that arguably defined the match's outcome.

Brex, a physically imposing centre known for his tactical acumen, found himself puzzled by the Stormers' tactical choices in the match's dying moments. "I was absolutely stunned they didn’t try to go around us as it was the obvious thing to do," Brex shared, reflecting on the Stormers' decision to not exploit the wider spaces despite Toulon being numerically disadvantaged. This decision, or lack thereof, underscored a game where every inch was contested fiercely, reflecting both teams' desperation and strategic calculations.

"We focused on getting people down on the breakdown, with only one man on the outside, because they had to play. They had to score. So we try to have a good first line on defense and hit hard, and that’s it. Just our jobs. And it worked."

Looking ahead, Brex anticipates a different challenge against Glasgow Warriors in the quarter-finals. Known for their high-tempo play and clever use of short kicks, Glasgow represents a stark contrast to last week's opponents. "Franco Smith can come up with something special that we haven’t seen before," Brex noted, acknowledging the crafty tactics of Glasgow's coach.

The artificial pitch at Scotstoun, known for its fast pace, adds another layer of complexity. Brex, ever the strategist, recognizes the need for adjustment. "The physical part will probably be the main point, but you have to adjust for the extra pace of the surface," he conceded, highlighting the unique challenges posed by different playing environments.

Brex's leadership style, characterized by selective communication and respect for his peers, has been instrumental in his role with both Italy and Toulon. "In Italy, people trust me. People know me very well. But I don’t talk all the time. I try to talk in the moments that I think are necessary," he explained, a testament to his thoughtful approach to leadership and team dynamics.

As Toulon prepares for their next European encounter, the memory of their narrow victory lingers, a reminder of the fine margins in top-tier rugby. With Brex at the helm, Toulon remains a formidable force, ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead on their road to the Champions Cup semi-finals. The stakes are high, the opposition formidable, but for Brex and his team, the journey is far from over. "It’s not finished," he says, quietly confident in the face of upcoming battles.

When Toulon went down to 13 I couldn't see how the Stormers could lose it with Sacha rampant and the momentum on their side. Good to see a player who was on the field calling out those terrible decisions in the last minutes as well.
