Oh, the agony! Just when you thought the Super Rugby Pacific season was about to kick off with a bang, the ACT Brumbies are hit with a cruel twist of fate. Their fearless leader, Captain Allan Alaalatoa, is benched with a nagging back injury, missing the much-anticipated opener against the Western Force in Perth come Valentine's Day. Talk about unlucky love!
It appears the rugby gods are playing a tough game with Alaalatoa, who has been grappling with this back issue for the last six months. Despite multiple head-scratching sessions with the medical wizards at Brumbies and Rugby Australia, there's still no clear culprit behind the pain, leaving our captain and his comeback plans in limbo.
"It’s something that I probably carried throughout the back end of last year and had to get some professional advice over the break and got a couple of scans,"
Alaalatoa divulged. He’s been advised to chill out and let things heal properly, aiming to return to the fray in top form. “The advice was just to take some time and make sure that it heals appropriately because I want to come back into employment 100% and try to contribute the best way I can.”
Reflecting on a less-than-stellar 2025, the frustration is palpable in Alaalatoa’s voice. The man just wants to do his bit effectively, without his body throwing tantrums.
"I felt like I probably wasn’t as effective as I could have been due to the body so I just want to make sure that I’m taking the time to get right so I can contribute the best way,"
he added, shedding light on his determination to return stronger. Meanwhile, the Brumbies will have to rally without their stalwart, at least for the initial clashes. As the team gears up for the season, fans will be keeping their fingers crossed, hoping their captain makes a triumphant return sooner rather than later. Will the Brumbies manage to hold the fort? Only time will tell.
Teams to watch this season include not only the Brumbies but also the Western Force, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming matches!
