In a twist that's stirring the pot in the Vodacom URC scene, Bulls coach Johan Ackermann has opted for Morné Smith over Wilco Louw for the upcoming clash against the Sharks at Loftus. It seems Louw's recent Springbok break has him benched, while Smith gets a golden chance to prove his mettle. And with Louw set to defect to the Stormers next season, it's showtime for Smith as he faces the formidable Springbok, Ox Nché.
"Wilco, Handré [Pollard], and Kurt-Lee [Arendse] all just returned from their rest, so they’re all looking good," Ackermann shared with reporters. However, the coach is clear about giving Smith the limelight, "Because Wilco hasn’t played in a while, we just felt that Morné was busy building some momentum and that this will be a great opportunity for him to test himself."
"The reality is we won’t have Wilco here next season so Morné has to show us that he can do it."
The Bulls lineup sees a boost with Bok returnees but also faces adjustments elsewhere. Jan-Hendrik Wessels will start at hooker, stepping in while Johan Grobbelaar is sidelined with a neck issue. Marco van Staden, usually seen in the back row, will cover as the replacement hooker—a decision spurred by necessity rather than choice.
"Johan had a bit of a knock to the neck against the Lions, then it recovered a bit but then he felt it again against Boland," Ackermann detailed, confirming the absence of structural damage but enough concern to warrant rest. "So we’ve decided to rest him because we felt we have Jan-Hendrik and we have Marco doing well for us at hooker. Marco has been training there, but we’ll only make a call in-game whether to bring him on as a hooker or back rower."
"Ultimately I think both teams have developed and made some changes with players coming back, so it’s a new game. We want to play to our standards and make sure we put a performance in that we can be proud of."
As the Bulls gear up to rewrite their last encounter's outcome—a 21-12 defeat in Durban—this rematch at Loftus is shaping up to be a showdown worth watching. With strategic shifts and player comebacks, it's anyone's game.
TEAMS: Jan-Hendrik Wessels starts at hooker for the Bulls, with Marco van Staden as the replacement hooker/back rower.
