It's that time of the year again when the rugby world turns its eyes towards the prestigious 2025 Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup. The recent draw has laid out a minefield for the South African teams, promising some titanic clashes and nerve-wracking drama in the months to come.

In the heavyweight class of the Champions Cup, South African teams are bracing for impact. The Vodacom Bulls, paired with the current European champions Bordeaux, English stalwarts Bristol Bears and Northampton Saints, the Scarlets from Wales, and France’s Section Paloise in Pool 4, are staring down the barrel of a particularly loaded gun. The Bulls’ road to glory looks rockier than ever, especially with the swirling uncertainties around coach Jake White’s future.

"2025-26 EPCR pool draws"

Not to be outdone, the Sharks have their own mountain to climb in Pool 1, squaring off against rugby giants like Toulouse and Clermont, English heavy-hitters Saracens and Sale Sharks, and Scotland’s Glasgow Warriors. Meanwhile, the Stormers, who made it to the quarter-finals last season, find themselves pitted against URC champions Leinster, English teams Harlequins and Leicester Tigers, and the French duo of Bayonne and La Rochelle in Pool 2.

The fixture list is as yet unconfirmed, but here’s what we know: the Bulls will lock horns with Bordeaux, Bristol, Northampton, and Pau, with two games at their fortress Loftus and two away. The Sharks are set for a clash with Toulouse, Clermont, Saracens, and Sale, with two matches at Kings Park and two on the road. The Stormers will face Harlequins, Tigers, Bayonne, and La Rochelle, with two games at Cape Town Stadium and two away. Only the top four teams from each of the four pools will secure a spot in the round of 16, ensuring every match is a do-or-die affair.

Over in the EPCR Challenge Cup, the Cheetahs and Lions are carrying the South African banner. The Lions find themselves in Pool 2 with Benetton, Dragons, Lyon, Newcastle, and Perpignan, while the Cheetahs have a tough road ahead in Pool 3 with Cardiff, Exeter Chiefs, Racing, Stade Francais, and Ulster.

With such explosive matchups on the horizon, the 2025/26 season of European rugby is shaping up to be one for the history books. Fans, mark your calendars and brace yourselves for a rollercoaster of tackles, tries, and nail-biting finishes.
