It seems the Vodacom Bulls' coach Johan Ackermann had a real puzzle to solve before locking down his squad for the upcoming clash against the Lions this Saturday. With last-minute drills at Loftus Versfeld, the decision-making process stretched to the eleventh hour, reflecting the drama that unfolds off the pitch as much as on it.

Ackermann, who appeared to be orchestrating a chaotic ensemble, shared, "It was a challenging week with a few players who were 50-50. There were instances where players were not available at the beginning of the week, could be considered later and then ultimately had to sit out." The team's readiness was evidently a seesaw affair, with health and availability playing the main antagonists.

"Someone like Canan [Moodie] was 50-50 and he trained with us, but he is still experiencing concussion symptoms here and there."

The uncertainty didn't stop at Moodie. Ruan Nortje's situation added to the coach's gray hairs, "Ruan returned from Scotland sick and we gave him as long as possible a chance, but we couldn’t select him." It's clear the Bulls were not only fighting against opposing teams but also against the fragility of human health.

Despite the setbacks, the Bulls have made some strategic shuffles. Only Springboks Handre Pollard and Kurt-Lee Arendse keep their spots in a backline that's been otherwise revamped. With Willie le Roux sidelined due to rest protocols, Devon Williams steps up as fullback, while Stravino Jacobs and Stedman Gans advance from the reserves after concussions benched Cheswill Jooste and Sebastian de Klerk.

Ackermann remains optimistic amidst the turmoil. "The number of injuries has upset our plans, but someone like Stedman is waiting for a long time for a starting chance and so is Devon at fullback. We have great confidence in the players who are coming in." His faith in the depth of his squad is palpable, even if the ideal of continuity remains just out of reach.

"There was simply no time for such talk this week,"

Ackermann commented on whether the team discussed last November’s defeat to the Lions. The focus was solely on recuperation after a grueling European tour, which included a lengthy layover in Paris, adding to their pre-game woes.

As Saturday approaches, the Lions await, confident and on their home turf, making the stakes even higher for the Bulls. The battle in Pretoria looms as a test of resilience and adaptability, qualities that this Bulls squad is getting all too familiar with.

Teams:

Bulls: Changes include Handre Pollard, Kurt-Lee Arendse retained; Devon Williams (fullback); Stravino Jacobs, Stedman Gans promoted.

Lions: Cohesion emphasized for the upcoming Jukskei derby.
