Bundee Aki is set to miss a significant chunk of the Six Nations after being slapped with a hefty suspension for verbally abusing and showing disrespect towards match officials. The 35-year-old Connacht centre faced the wrath of an Independent Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday, which handed down a six-week suspension, albeit with two weeks suspended for a probationary period of two years.

The fiery incident that led to Aki's punishment occurred during a Round 10 BKT United Rugby Championship clash at Dexcom Stadium in Galway. Post-match interactions with the officiating crew landed Aki in hot water, with the committee finding his conduct in breach of several disciplinary rules.

"The Player engaged with the match official team after the game on several occasions in a manner which breached the Disciplinary Rules."

As a result, Aki will be sidelined for Connacht's upcoming match against Zebre, along with Ireland's initial three Six Nations fixtures against France, Italy, and England. He won't be back on the pitch until February 28, when Connacht takes on Glasgow Warriors, leaving him available for the final two Six Nations matches against Wales and Scotland.

The disciplinary panel, led by Roddy Dunlop KC of Scotland and including Attie Heyns of South Africa and Andrea Caranci of Italy, refused to offer mitigation due to Aki's previous disciplinary issues and his decision not to plead in the matter. They emphasized the importance of respecting match officials and the values of rugby.

"The Committee reminded the Player of the importance of the Spirit and values of the game of rugby and the importance of respect towards Match Officials."

This decision has stirred up conversations about the Irish Rugby Football Union's consistency in handling disciplinary cases, with some critics accusing the body of double standards. However, the IRFU's firm handling of the situation indicates a lesson learned from past controversies.

With Aki out, Andy Farrell has had to rejig his squad, bringing in Ulster's Jude Postlethwaite to fill the void. This shake-up adds yet another layer of challenge for Ireland's coach, who is already grappling with other injury concerns within the team.
