Vodacom Bulls coach Johan Ackermann couldn't hide his satisfaction after Cameron Hanekom's emphatic return to the field against Cardiff. The Springbok flanker, sidelined for nine grueling months due to a knee injury, stormed off the bench in the 52nd minute to play a pivotal role in the Bulls' commanding 40-7 victory at Loftus. Hanekom's dynamic play was instrumental in Ruan Vermaak's try, marking a significant comeback.
Ackermann praised the 23-year-old's performance, noting the challenges of returning from such a lengthy absence. "He's been out for a long time, so sometimes it takes a game or two to get back into it. But he showed his class by carrying well, putting pressure on the defense, and getting a turnover," Ackermann remarked. He expressed hope for Hanekom's trajectory, stating, "That will give him confidence. It’s good to have him back and hopefully it can just go upwards."
"He’s very dangerous in space – he showed his speed and class,"
Another player making a notable return was scrumhalf Embrose Papier, who had missed the previous match due to the birth of his first child. Ackermann was equally impressed with Papier's performance, highlighting his agility and strategic play. "He also made a great turnover at the breakdown, and his kicking was good. He had a good game,” Ackermann added.
The Bulls' rebound from their defeat to the Stormers last week was a focal point for Ackermann. Despite an initial setback with Cardiff scoring first, the Bulls dominated the first half, leading 33-7 at halftime. However, the second half saw fewer points on the board, something Ackermann attributed to missed opportunities and unforced errors. "In the second half, we didn't convert enough pressure. We made unforced errors, especially with offloads," he explained.
Ackermann also noted improvements in the team's set-piece and overall demeanor. "I thought our set-piece was much better than last week. Our energy and body language were also much better," he said. Despite acknowledging the imperfections in their game, Ackermann remained optimistic, "It was far from perfect and there’s a lot of work to be done, but we’ll take it."
With this victory, the Bulls moved up to seventh on the Vodacom URC log and are set to host Munster next Saturday, aiming to continue their upward trajectory in the league standings.
