David Campese is currently basking in the glow of Australia's emphatic win over South Africa at Ellis Park, kickstarting their Rugby Championship campaign with a bang. Contrite yet exuberant, Campese confesses to feasting on "copious amounts of humble pie" under the Brisbane sun, following the Wallabies' display that defied his earlier critiques.

Campese, known for his risk-taking on the field, carries the same boldness into his punditry. "As a player, I never settled for mediocrity, and I bring that same attitude to commenting. I wear my heart on my sleeve," he admits. His recent advocacy for James O’Connor to play at 10 proved prescient as O’Connor dazzled with his direct play and crucial assists, like the 35m left-hand pass that set up Max Jorgensen’s try.

The Wallabies’ style was reminiscent of the glory days Campese cherishes. "It was the antithesis of the Joe Schmidt playbook method," he observed, highlighting the team's intuitive, fast-paced counterattacking as a return to form. "Harry Wilson and his crew seemed to adopt a ‘let’s give it a crack’ attitude, which really paid off," Campese noted, proud of the team’s bold approach.

"JOC was superb in his directness, his ambition and that wonderful 35m left hand pass to set up the Max Jorgensen try," Campese praised.

The match also showcased the prowess of the Wallabies' midfield trio—O’Connor, Len Ikitau, and Joseph Suaalii—whose intellect and skill were on full display. The dynamic backline, supported by the disruptive presence of Nick Frost and the leadership from the back-row, underscored a team that not only played to win but did so with style and strategic acumen.

Looking ahead, Campese anticipates a fierce comeback from the Springboks. "Next weekend, South Africa will be eager to prove this was a one-off. Their training will be intense, but this Wallaby team has shown they can turn big challenges into opportunities," he asserts.

Despite his prior criticisms, Campese's final reflections are filled with admiration and national pride: "Nothing gave me more pleasure than watching our team triumph in the true Aussie style. It’s about more than just winning; it’s how we win that counts."
