Less than a year after taking charge at Terenure College Rugby Football Club, Carlos Spencer, the former All Black standout, is exiting his coaching position to return to New Zealand for personal reasons. Appointed with high expectations, Spencer's sudden departure comes with the Dublin-based club positioned fifth in the Energia All Ireland Division 1A, just outside the playoff spots, with crucial matches looming.
Spencer, who had been contracted for three years, cited the strain of being apart from his family as a key factor in his decision. "I have coached in clubs in Japan, South Africa, and New Zealand and this is the first time without my family alongside me. I thought I was strong enough to do it alone with commuting at the right times. I wasn’t," he explained.
"I have found this decision very difficult given how much I’ve enjoyed the role at the club, but the pull from my family at home has been too strong,"
Spencer remarked.
During his brief stint, Spencer did make a notable impact at Terenure, guiding the team to a memorable victory in the Leinster Senior Cup and injecting a palpable excitement that resonated well with the players and fans alike. The club praised his contributions, stating, "During his tenure with the club, Carlos delivered excellent results...and instilled an exciting sense of magic and stardust that energized both the players and our supporters."
Despite his departure, Spencer will continue to influence the team’s tactics and preparations remotely for the remainder of the season. "I’ve really enjoyed my time with the club, particularly working and developing the players and coaches over the season. I will continue to be involved in the direction of the team for the rest of this season and look forward to our continued success," he added.
The club has expressed its gratitude towards Spencer for his dedication and leadership, affirming that his "passion and expertise have left an indelible mark on our club." As Terenure College RFC eyes the playoffs, the search for a new head coach who can build on Spencer’s foundation has begun, with the rugby community eagerly watching. Meanwhile, Spencer looks forward to possibly returning to Lakelands in a different capacity in the future, maintaining his bond with the club and its supporters.
